Erm, worth checking what I own and have owned; have had Astons for over a decade. To those who come from a time before Gaydon was grand designed, a roofless Aston will always be a Volante. To us a roadster is something American, like basketball, collateral damage and blue-on-blue death.

The Zagato connection may be clever, but the DB7 Zagato is like Lesley Ash after her lip plumping; not a thing of beauty and only a classic in the sense that it's very funny.
They were Volantes before because they had four seats (2+2) or had it as an option. Roadster refers to a car that only ever has two seats ie, the Vantage range. Things like the DB4 were convertible whereas the DB6 was Volante.

Well technically, an open top Vantage likely wouldn't be a roadster either. A roadster refers to a car that has NO top, and very few production cars are actually roadsters. The Veritas, SLR Stirling Moss, and possibly the Ariel Atom could be considered true roadsters. The MX-5, which is simply called "Roadster" in Japan, is not a true roadster nor would any potential Vantage drophead be. "Convertible" would be a more accurate description than "V12 Vantage Roadster".

Zagato-tweaked astons are usually big-gobbed things that look great from in front, but awful from behind. this successfully maintains that tradition.

But that's just your view. The fact is that in the 50s manufacturers like Jaguar used the word roadster to describe their models with basic rain gear so the XK120 Roadster had a single layer canvas roof and sliding side-screens whereas the drop-head coupe had a multiple layer double-duck roof, which concealed the hood frame, and wind-up windows. Therefore the word roadster has been defined, in use, by Jaguar as a sports car with a lightweight convertible roof.
