Back in April 2007 I had had enough of piling 20,000 miles on my Cooper S so fancied a car to share the commuting pain with the mini.

With a budget of £500 I spent many a months looking but unsold on ebay with no bids was a 1994 525i SE Touring manual with 202,000 miles and very little info.

A bit of digging revealed it had FBMWSH and was pretty tidy with buffalo leather and fully working sunroof.

A cheeky £400 bid later saw me as the owner.

I kept the car for over 2 years doing some big trips in it and taking it to over 230,000 with routine service and a fix to the leaking SLS. It wallowed, the engine seemed slightly down on power and the gearbox was likely stiring porridge but on it went, truthfully never feeling like it would ever break.

I sold it for twice what I paid for it to fund a replacement, a 2000 530i SE with lots of toys that has run near faultlessly for over 40,000 miles (now on 183,000) and sporting a recent LPG conversion.
However, I DO regret selling the Touring. A work friend has now run it for 2yrs with no issues and sits on approx 240,000. Great car!

It's in this month's Total Vauxhall as we had a day at Janspeed on the rollers. It got 53BHP at the wheels. I had to put a cheeky sticker on:

I had a VTS (same phase and age). It caused me more problems than I care to mention. Be warned! Still, good value though and they are fun!
See above post smile
Funnily enough, mine had the same problem. Twice.

yes

Which begs the question: When is a snotter not a snotter?

When you care about it and paid over a grand for it. You can care if it is dirt cheap, or you can have something not so cheap that you still run into the ground, but if you care for something not very cheap then it's not really a snotter.

That's what I think, anyway!

Same here, where do people find these cars from??

Luck in the adverts, ebay, unwanted p/x from traders, friend of a friend??

Yep, Got to be a few hundred quid, not bothered where you leave it, if you lock it, drive up kerbs etc. I do look after my snotters (change oil etc) but certainly wouldn't be upset if I put it through a hedge!

Cheers, it's not though! That photo flatters it very well. In reality every panel has a slightly different spray job, odo shows 197k, dings to front nearside and rear offside quarters. Tappets are the worst I've ever heard even on top quality fully synthetic oil..

Passed MOT first time though and never asked me for anything but routine service parts. Still handles like a dream and the engine managed 106bhp (from original 114bhp) on the rollers. Not bad for a 20ish yr old...

I'm planning time off in July to clean up the tappets, change the cambelt and do some bushes. Not going to spend much on it but I enjoy tinkering...

Picked this 1.25 Fiesta up as a run around until my insurance runs out at Xmas, where i'll hopefully have 3 years NCB.
Brilliant little cars, slightly small for someone tall but does the job.

I've also noticed something rather odd about these cars, the alloy wheels NEVER get dirty. They're always spotless, no dust, grime, nothing.

Would be funny if another owner noticed this too. biggrin
