Wow that is cheap, as you say for £120 its got to be worth a try. Not got a compressor at all, but could hire one. When you say decent, what sort of size do you think I should go for ? Also any good recommendations on where to get the plastidip ?

Cheers

Just got this 206 1.4 HDI for £50 from a family member. 178,000 miles. It needs a clutch (loudest throwout bearing I've ever heard), but has recent timing belt, suspension rebuilt, newish winter tyres, full service history and two owners from new. It even has AC... that WORKS! It was FILTHY when I got it. I asked and it has been washed and hoovered ONCE in the 5 years she's owned it. It's been on a hilly 60 mile commute in rural Northumberland for the past 5 years, every day, no matter what the weather, and it's never let her down. She's replaced it with an identical 206, just 100,000 miles newer. Well maintained, but not well looked after. It actually cleans up quite nicely, paint is pretty bad and there's some small dents, but the interior is a nice place to be with very little wear.

If you include the clutch, £300 all in. Not bad for a 60MPG beater, surprisingly fun to drive actually.

I test drove a 1.4 HDI 206 for my Mrs on Saturday. This one had a slightly crunchy 1st gear and smelt of dog so we didn't buy it but it was actually a rather nice drive, felt like a bigger car behind the wheel and plenty pokey enough.

Much better than expected, somehow bigger inside than outside. Lots of road noise though, gonna have to get to work on the deadening in the back especially.

After four years of totally reliable motoring the Suzuki is finally dead...it's been written off due to being hit whilst parked. It's now CAT C so not worth fixing for the MOT and the VIC test, so it's time to move on.
So the next snotter is this:

1997 Honda Odyssey 2.2 import, done around 100k miles, 10 month MOT, bought it whilst away in Cornwall on holiday. It needed a really good service, autobox oil change and a radio, otherwise it's in very good condition and mint underneath. Electric panoramic roof, A/C that works, captains chairs, the works!!

All for £500...

So a year or so on and the old girl is still going strong, has even done a couple of road rallies!! Straight through the MOT, has saved twice the cost of itself for skips I would have needed for some home improvements, proper snotter!!

Joining the party with my 2003 Mondeo LX, with the 1.8 petrol Duratec HE engine. My third car.

Picked it up last weekend for £570 (with half a tank) having seen it on Auotrader, and spoken to the seller (church-going geophysicist! Was very genuine).

Generally immaculate, 69k miles, 12 months MOT, loads of service history from Ford, and an independent garage. Serviced last month (few hundred miles ago) - oil, plugs and all filters done, plus new rear calliper, and handbrake cable & mechanism (£470 invoice...)

Massive step up from my £500 1999 Polo which was my first bad buy (but, 7th vehicle) - needed a new gearbox after 4 days - and plenty to get through the MOT that would have expired next week.

I would like heated leather, and alloys, so if it behaves, I might upgrade the interior and wheels if something comes up at the right price.

Needs passenger window switch replacing, and an air-con regas. What I thought was rusty discs, or dragging pads has turned out to be a wheel bearing, so a new rear hub will be going on ASAP. I'll be giving it a polish and seal, the drivers water-marked seat a clean, and the engine cover some trim dressing, and that's about it.

Very comfy, quiet, cruise control, air con, fuel computer, and an AUX port... very happy with it indeed! Perfect for starting my grad job with I think.

My new snotter.

05 kia rio

Picked it up for a paltry £180
With just 63k on the clock it seems to be mechanically in good nick.

The interior stunk horrifically of smoker and I've been spending the last few days getting rid of that! The latest thing was an aerosol odur bomb.. niw it stinks of toothpase instead.... Much better !!

Also one tyre was bald to the tthread's so got that replaced for a few bob.

2000 Ford Puma 1.7

£174 on eBay with 134k, a near full service history, a short MOT and knackered clutch. Gave it a full service with fresh fluids and filters, put a clutch in it (£85) new back box (£28!) and a few other bits. Replaced the dented bonnet for a tenner (eBay again), for example. Typical Ford in that all bits are dirt cheap, available absolutely everywhere, and the car is easy to work on.

Needed a small plate on each still for the MOT and that was it, although more grot lurks which may condemn it next year. Car owes me about £350 and a chunk of time. Drives lovely. Engine is really sweet, pulls well, and the handling is a delight.

Body condition is actually above average for a Puma but that isn't saying much really. Rear arches a bit bubbly but not too bad. Dent on front wing and paintwork is tatty. A mop would help but that's not really the point of this. We are going to use it as a bargain basement track day car. Will be interesting to see how it stands up.

Well my snotter has just killed her self off, went to do the brakes on it and noticed the radiator is completely naffed, £130 for a Behr rad, needs a clutch, needs suspension arms, needs a few other things done to it, it's now decided to have a flat tyre so she's going into work tomorrow and being torn to bits and scrapped.
Doesn't make sense any more, only annoying bit, apart from the MOT till August, is it had a new windscreen last year and I've just put my leather interior into it.

Wouldn't you be better driving it until Augest then with the rad as is? I don't get this trend for scrapping cars with ticket!

Clutch is on 206k miles, water is firing out of rad and I've got a trip to Germany and the Ring at the end of May, I don't want to take a car that is not tip top out to Germany, and certainly not one leaking fluids onto the ring.
It's had it's day to be fair, I'm looking at £700 or so now to get it all back together as opposed to the £500 it was going to be, at £700 it doesn't make financial sense, I can just buy another one for that which isn't a 525i

I fancied a change from my trusty old ST170. Working at a car auction is dangerous! This came in, I thought "Christ that's clean". So I bought it.

2005 Mazda 3 sport. 2.0 and 147 tyre shredding ponies. Locally owned since 2008 and full service history. Last service was 500 miles before I bought it. The previous owner had just put 2 new tyres on it at the same time.

88000 miles and ticket til may.

Every MOT from 3 years old, it's never once even had an advisory!

I've done 1200 miles in it and it is absolutely perfect! Hasn't used a drop of oil or coolant either. 250 miles over the weekend without any issues. I like the thing! There is barely a mark on it, has Bose sound, climate control, xenon's, auto lights and wipers etc. There is very little difference in performance(in a straight line at least) between this and the ST170.

Said new tyres are utter ste though. Sounds like I'm driving on marbles but they are firestones, what do you expect.

All this Japanese goodness for £800 including the fees.hehe

3.2 lire MV6, 77k and a full service history but I've elected to go ahead and have the cambelt done anyway.

It's got most of the toys except leather and satnav but I wouldn't have wanted the latter anyway.

It goes well too! Quite pleased with it.

Depends how well you apply it really.
Apply it liberally so it's nice and thick and it peels straight off, apply it like a cheapskate and it's a complete arse to get off.
And don't use the plastidip primer unless you intend to stay that colour forever.

But basically
de-tar the car
clean it thoroughly to get any traces off tar and glue remover off
dry it all off
get an air line in any nooks and crannies
mask it up, you don't have too be that good at masking if there is a break between body work and what you're masking, as it does self mask to some degree, but it makes life easier if you do.
Spray it on, I used 5 litres and applied liberally, let it dry for an hour or so, demasked, drove it home.
Pits, do you mind if I ask how much it was to do the whole car ? I just got a cheapo Volvo and quite fancy having a go at a colour change, plus saves trying to sort out all the scratches etc.

Cheers

Andy
This is tempting.

My Jag is going to roll over 200k this year and I thought it might be a grin to paint it orange. It's currently a faded BRG.

Nice!

Can anyone working at a car auction have a punt? Always did wonder.

I used to think if they got to see something early on and fancied it, they could maybe move it right to the back so it was last in when most of the crowd had gone home etc hehe

I was always a fan of Carltons and Senators. I've had many and had to chop in my last Senator about 11 years ago when I started a new job and it was too old for the co' car scheme to I bought one of these and loved it. (The Senator was totaled about a week after I sold it. Shame too as I'd managed to squeeze about 240 bhp out of it if I remember correctly.)

This one's to replace my S-Class Merc' as my Wife won't drive it. frown

I'm very happy with it. While it's not as all out fast as the Merc' by quite a way it feels more 'planted' on the road and much more responsive so bends are more fun.

I have picked up a new shed, as my trusty old BMW is starting to suffer (its 30 years old and I think its prop shaft is starting to fail and I want to take it off the road for some TLC).

So obviously I should have bought something sensible, solid, economical yada yada yada. Instead I spent £400 on this...

Its a rather shabby Alfa 156 2ltr Twin Spark Estate. The interior smells mildly of dog, the suspension occasionally goes clonk, the engine has a slight rattle, only the passenger side windows work and the bumpers have been used for touch parking...

Meet Franken bumper...

It actually drives rather well, but I do wonder exactly how long I can run this one the cheap before my conscience kicks in!
