I fancied a change from my trusty old ST170. Working at a car auction is dangerous! This came in, I thought "Christ that's clean". So I bought it.
Nice! Can anyone working at a car auction have a punt? Always did wonder.
I used to think if they got to see something early on and fancied it, they could maybe move it right to the back so it was last in when most of the crowd had gone home etc
Yes anyone who works there can buy cars. I/we don't get them any cheaper but I must say, I've bought some absolute crackers through work over the years.
As nice as it would be to stick the cars I want first in or right at the end my conscience would get the better of me!
If some bellend has annoyed me on the other hand. Get to the back!
Probably a bit over budget to be a proper snotter, stands me in £1500. Made its money back and more in van hire. Moved house, cleared 2 garages and moved a couple of 3 piece suites with it. Must have been to the tip 5 times this year already full of crap in the back.
18in wheels, tinted windows and a full length sunroof. Loads of little knocks and scratches on it which is perfect as it means I don't mind leaving it anywhere. Little rust scab on one door, bit on the bottom of one wheel arch and none underneath it. Proper wafty inconspicuous sofa on wheels, done a few 6 hour journeys without getting the hump with it..
Radio in it was pants so I figured to do an android install with a sub in the back. Set it all up and then realised that I don't care what it looks like so just screwed the tablet to the dashboard rather than fit it properly behind the facia.
Problem is it was just supposed to be a beater to throw crap in, go to tescos and get me to work but I've had it a year now and fallen in love with the bloody thing, most useful car I've ever owned

Isn't that what Mercedes them selves do with the sat nav screens these days?!Toaster Pilot said:
I give you £200 worth of automatic petrol Scenic II which apart from the famous electric window faults (drivers one works) and the odd clunk from the steering rack is utterly fault free
Done about 1000 miles in it over the past few weeks and it's growing on me. 152k on the clock!
Renaults of that vintage are good value for money! Good shedding!

Nah, this happens when I go to the auctions http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...Renaults of that vintage are good value for money! Good shedding!
This Scenic is earning it's keep though for sure, it's tested until July so I'll chuck it in and if it is too horrific I'll take a couple of the easy to get at bits off and weigh in the rest for the inevitable £10 or so, pretty hard to lose at this price point

Still have nightmares about ours which we finally outed at 4 years old after a very traumatic ownership experience. But I had (a lot) more than £200 invested in it. I think that was the problem.

Yeah I sleep very easily even though it might not start in the morning - if it was many thousands like yours would've been I'm not so sure But I had (a lot) more than £200 invested in it. I think that was the problem.

They either go for ever (like many early taxi's did), or fall to bits. It's still the car I see most on the hard shoulder. So much so, it's become a bit of a running joke as soon as we see anything in the distance with hazard lights flashing. It's almost always French or Vauxhall.

Pre-facelift get a bad rep for build quality but I figure it isn't new so I don't care if it falls apart inside.
Have you had any major issues?
I've got the auto 3.2 v6 petrol one, averages 20mpg driving it with no thought towards economy. The diesels average a £1k premium over the petrols so unless you're planning on doing mega miles aren't worth buying. Rust is the main issue with them, this was the 3rd that I looked at and the chassis of the other 2 looked like they'd been parked in a field all of their lives. Other than that I've done nearly 10k miles in it and it's only bug is that it throws an abs fault up once a week and puts the gearbox in limp mode, turning it off and on again resets it and off you go. 99% certain it's the nsf sensor but can't be arsed to investigate until it gets annoying.
It's probably been the most reliable shed that I've ever had and I am constantly amazed by the amount of crap it can consume in the back of it, I'm so proud of it that I wish that I had taken photos of the achievements
They're not bad off road but nowhere near disco standards, you would definitely need decent tyres to play in anything more than a field in wet and it'd handle green lanes if they're not too churned up. Mines got no squeaks or rattles, things do pop off if you just pull on them but they pop straight back on again, they don't just fall off.
All the petrols have mayo under the oil cap in cold weather, it's a merc thing. Alll of them have some rust, it's down to how much you find acceptable, I'd just steer clear of anything with more than surface rust underneath. I'd also keep away from anything with any major electrical stuff going on, a crap battery will throw up loads of faults on them but unless it's dirt cheap I wouldn't take the risk.
Oh and between them my mates have 4 discos and a rangie and I'd pick my ml everytime if you're going to spend the majority of time on tarmac.

I've read that the diesels suffer horrific injector issues so had decided on a petrol anyway.
Picked up a couple of weeks back:
Paid £250 for it with 200k miles. Since then changed the right rear hub as the wheel bearing was shot so another £40. Also gave it a damned good clean and its running nicely now. So far done about 800 miles in it.
Everything works except the right rear electric window and right rear central locking. Probably £40 for another door module.
Spec includes leccy seats, leccy windows all round, auto headlights, auto wipers, climate control, folding leccy mirrors and an excellent radio.
Only bought it for carrying dogs (we have 4 small ones) so it saves ruining the other cars.

Have you had any major issues?
Generic problems......lack of blow on the heater ---> cabin filter, 5 min job.
EAS PAS BLA BLA light on dashboard relay snag.
Excessive smoking -----> EGR Valve and inlet decoke... -----> 2 hour diy job.
Loved my old ML, despite all the negative comments and words, it was a cracker.
Only thing to really watch is injector seal leak (google black death ML) these done properly are a bit of a ball ache, but not THAT bad to do!

Is that plate 'MFU'?
My new snotter, Audi a6 1.8t se manual (non-quattro), owned by my dad for 11 years when he was offered £100 for it in part ex against a 2014 Audi A4 I snapped it up. It's been well maintained mechanically serviced etc but Dad never really cleaned it inside or out! It's on 135,000 miles.
I think part of the reason for the very low part ex offer was it had a very short MOT and permanently lit ABS light. A mate of mine stuck a second hand ABS controller on it (£126) and a few other minor bits and it now has a full 12 month ticket.
Issues; front elec windows dodgy, overdue a cambelt change, biting point on clutch high but no slipping.
Plan is to tidy it right up and keep it as a spare for tip runs, popping round town etc.
