This is/was supposed to be my winter snotter, bought for a whopping £500... ...the shine was taken off by the drive belts shearing off, holing the radiator on the m1 outside leicester and then the overheating turbo setting fire to the hoses on the hard shoulder but we won't go into that It since turned into my 'b ks, stripping down engines is easier than putting them back together' car. New running snotter is 1997 2.0 Galaxy that I got from a dealer as an unwanted part ex for £700 with 12 months mot. Bit rough round the edges but I need a van and something I can stick L plates on for the missus and so it's perfect right now. As I type she (the Galaxy, not SWMBO) is sat outside with about 30 rubble sacks of junk in her, going to be fun trying to get her to pull that to the tip in the morning no pics of it yet though.

FLGirl said: Has this thread died a bit? Can't really think where else to show off my purchase! I have to sneak it in as I did pay just over a grand, but it's intended to be a workhorse and second car. I drove the 2 hours home last night in pouring, horrible rain and it was so full of character that I named it an hour in (Alfie ) and am hopelessly in love with it, quirks and all! It's had lots of recent work (inc cambelt, clutch and service) plus a fresh MOT. I was really looking for an ultra cheap, more roomy, super reliable estate. But...but... it's an Alfa! And it's a 2.4JTD which is more refined than I thought and plenty torquey. Pictured alonsgide my daily drive, am bloody happy with it! The original 2.4JTD in the 156 was/is an absolute stonking engine - seriously pokey too.

Just bought an S reg 106 1.5D.. £450 Plan on selling my Golf GT TDI and having some cheap motoring.. Did think about running it on veg oil but have heard the lucas pumps don't hold up too well, not sure how easy it would be to change?

My snottering has been busy these past few months. First off was this E46 328i SE - Bought with a new MOT and FSH at 122k for the princely sum of £625. Lovely car, leather, climate, etc etc. Nice wafter that could shift if needed. Since replaced with this nice Alfa - bought on a whim, so the Beemer had to go! It's astonishing what value these are - 93k, huge history file and April MOT for £695! Couple of issues that were easily sorted (Dreaded MCSF message - cleaned the MAF and cleared the codes, not happened since) I should point out that both cars were auction purchases, so not for the faint hearted, but mechanically both were spot on. These sorts of motors are so out of favour at the moment, but give many opportunities for the enthusiast owner. Shedding is really the wrong description for either one of them.

My daily car has had quite an engine malfunction, so whilst I was at work, I asked a mate to try and get me a car for under £400 a bit pronto that I can use whilst my 'normal' car is off the road being fixed. He came back with this My god it is awful, but having driven it for a few days now, it's kinda fun, it stinks of oil and the steering is hopeless but I now very much appreciate a snotter, although having seen what could have been bought, feel slightly annoyed

Bought for the sake of it, well, almost, I'll need a cheap run about for the Winter as I don't want to even think about taking out my Chevy pickup when the gritters are around. Bought it cheap, currently having the head gasket sorted, then I'll rack the miles up in it, or possibly sell it on for a quick profit and buy a Clio 172. It's got a decent spec, generally tidy, interior isn't to everyone's taste, but it's heated leather which will do nicely for when it gets cold outside.

Always liked the 'Golfs with a boot' as my first car was a Mk2 Jetta. What engine is in yours? Nice wheels on it. The Bora 4motions often catch my attention on Ebay.

Great value motors - not really snotters at all. I would have snapped that E46 up for £625! I'm sure you managed to sell it for considerably more!

Ta, It's the V5 engine, 10v so 150bhp. Really smooth engine, sounds quite nice & is generally better on fuel that what most people say too, on a couple of runs I've seen 30+mpg which isn't at all bad. I think it's a highline model, (at least that's what the sticker in the boot says) That would explain the climate control, heated leather, electric windows & mirrors etc.
