It's certainly not unusual, from what I have seen on doing some brief research. Often attributed to incorrect oil and filter change procedure.
Yep, not priming the oil filter can be very bad news for the EJ20. I've seen loads fail just after service.

Been snottering around in this for a couple of years, although I'd say its more of a sniveller than a snotter.

Should be sold very soon, and replacing it is...

520i auto touring £405 fleabay whim. Mot march, need to tax it. Seems in pretty good nick really.

The current daily doesn't fit the thread, as it was £2k.

However, my previous snotter was £800 and I think a worthy candidate.

If anyone is looking for a barge sized snotter this has appeared on the Volvo boards (no affiliation except an un natural desire to own it!!) hehe

Its probably the best looking sub £1k (its £800) S80 I have seen, and I look a lot!

Wow! That does look a bargin for the price... And one of the requirement for my next car is leather. If only my Megane was ready to sell, id snap that one up.

My line of snottering success has come to an end. frown

I bought a cheapy Impreza Turbo off ebay with no tax or test, and when taking it for retest on Thursday (having fitted new rear discs/pads) I gave it some welly for the first time to warm it up properly for the emissions test and the engine now seems to be comprehensively buggered.

Dont click on the link if you have any mechanical sympathy!

Thats life I suppose!
Is it smoking?
Could be lucky and something is just very very loose (engine mount, gearbox mount, manifolds etc) I suppose at least with a scooby its parts are in demand and will sell quickly. Speaking of which what wheels does it have? If they're 6 spoke standard gold ones I know somebody who will buy at least one.
I thought that, at first I thought it was knacked (big end) but as I watched the clip I wasn't sure.

I'd PM JollyGreenMonster on here (link to his profile) and ask him to have a listen http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/profile.asp?h=0...

JGM is one of the most respected Impreza tuners out there and is a top chap from all of his postings and what the community always says about him.

Lee
I'm almost certain its a bearing failure. It rattles on start up for a second, idles ok, will rev slowly up to 3k and rattles from then on in. Also will rattle when blipping the throttle, but not on the overrun.Doesn't smoke, but will get very hot.

In summary, it's fked!
Oh frown

I hope you didn't pay too much for it.

If you're willing breaking Impreza's will usually lead to a very healthy profit. Lots of good, working Impreza's are getting bought to be broken right now.

Lee
Sorry to hear that, to hard to diagnose for me, assume the worst and you might be suprised. On the bright side if it is non repairable they make good breakers.

If I thought I could sell my Picanto for the settlement figure + £800 I'd buy that right now!

Fair play. Chalk & cheese eh?

I loved my Alfa but couldn't justify throwing £1,000 - £1200 at a £450 car to keep it on for another 12 months.. Plus THAT seating position... What were they thinking??

Reckon my next snotter needs to be either:

328 coupe OR GTV or st170

Annual 'ohoh' day today for the Dog Van - will it or won't it pass the MOT!?

Handed over the keys having done NOTHING to prepare it - in fact, when I went to dig-out last year's cert. (I had this feeling you needed it to post-date the next one) I realised I'd done nothing about LAST years advisory of "front brakes at limit of balance"...

One hour of banter in the workshop later and I have a new MOT - 2 advisories on rust starting around the drivers seatbelt mount and the passenger rear suspension mount but I'm told they;re easily fixed (which I'll probably do the day before the NEXT MOT!) smile

Oddly, the brakes weren't mentioned this time - so they're either getting better with age (and they were never great) or it's an intermittent fault - certainly the car doesn't pull to one side when braking (it does rattle the n/s front suspension to bits tho - another job there then)

and the power steering cooler leak (glad that stuff is cheapish) - diesel pump leak (not so cheap but tiny so just gives the car that 'Old Transit' smell) and so on...

But it's a shed and it's now MOT'd past it's 18th Birthday - dogs transported for another few months at least smile

Next stop, moon mileage - only 2K to go (perigee) or 32K (apogee) smile

I Have a Citroen Xsara 2.0 Hdi 110bhp estate...lovely car, absolute minter. Bought for just over the £500 bangernomics budget.

Minter apart from the knackered rear beam and the dead clutch.

After 3700 long and hard and mean miles....its off to the scrapheap she goes...frown

got a choice of a £325 renault laguna 1.6 sport with 90k miles, tax and mot until april but no service history and a knackered ball joint,a ford ka for £275 with only a few days MOT left, or another KA for £450 with no tax but MOT until march.....whichever one I buy I'm sure it'll be a laugh until it explodes.

if its a laguna mk1 then its a good motor, but if its a mk2 don't touch it with a bargepole.

funny you should say that, as I was just browsing ebay and wondering why so many mk2's were up for sale cheap,

Anything in particular I should look at on the Mk1 when viewing the car?

I never really had any problems with my mk1 but it was a Volvo engined rti, in all the time I had the car I think apart from general servicing all it had was a sunroof motor which was £3 off eBay, and the gearbox lost its oil due to a seal going, also it had a cutting out problem which after having 2 new fuel pumps fitted I found out it was the wiring going onto the pump which I was told was a common problem.

On the later mk1 check out the headlamps as they have plastic covers rather than glass which go cloudy.
But all in all I thought it was a good reliable motor and quite well screwed together.

I won't go into the problems I had with the mk2 as I don't have a spare day to write about the problems, but put it this way I don't think there was a single component which didn't go wrong, it put me off Renault for life, and the car was only 4 years old when I finally swapped it for a 300 fiesta in desperation.
