RE: SOTW: 1988 Ford Granada Ghia 2.9 V6
Discussion
Not sure what the tyre profile is but I can check the Ghia wheels on the Mk2 as there 14s aswell.
Them wheels there were an optional extra aswell as the Rs kit in 1988. (Assuming there Rs7 alloys, I'm on my phone so can't see properly at the.moment)
Can still be bought new for E850 from main dealers here in Ireland.

The car where Ford design studio lost the plot IMO.
As far as 'dated design' goes check out the shape of what most of you are probably driving now.
The Cosworth V6 engine is quite sought after, so don't expect to get a healthy one of those on the cheap.
Fuel consumption - 16mpg mentioned...clearly something amiss there.
In the car's defence, I'd have anticipated 25-30mpg unless you're ragging the arse off it.
No I wouldn't buy that one at any price, because the seller sounds like a p***y.

I rememeber following one down the M74 at an indicated 125 mph for about 80 miles.
(you could do that in those days)
What shocked me was that it was August 1st and it had the new reg for that day/year
I was on a Laverda Jota so had to stop for fuel - I guess he just carried on regardless
Neither exactly renowned for speedo accuracy though. (you could do that in those days)

Reminds me of a nearly-new red Jota my boss took in as part-ex when I sold motorcycles. He paid a pittance for it (about the same price as a new Honda 750 at the time) and despite it not having a bean of interest, he refused to sell it to me for what he paid because he thought I'd kill myself on it. I was riding a Gold Wing GL1000 at the time but I was barely tall enough to have my toes flat on the floor on the Jota....
Awesome shed. My Dad used to own a gold 1987 D plate Ford Granada Scorpio 2.9 V6 4x4 hatch which was an ex Ford car. Full leather, DIS, heated seats, air con, electric rear seats, the list goes on. Highly equipped car for the day. Great childhood memories and the seats were sublime and you could sleep in the back comfortably even when you had 3 people in the back as there was so much room. How many cars can you do that in nowadays?
If I remember rightly, it was also car of the year in 1987 and was the first car to have ABS as standard.
Many have rusted away now though. Shame as they were a great car.

Terrible SOTW.
If you must have a Granada then the only one worth having is the 24v Cosworth. I had two and they aren't half bad. 190bhp ? RWD... dangerously tail happy in the wet with cheap tyres on the rear, capable of upsetting many 'hot hatch' drivers.
Unfortunately there aren't many left - as the Granny Cosworth is so cheap (sub 1000, even 5-6 years ago) a lot of people bought em and stripped out the engines for kit cars or whatever.

My Dad had a couple of these back in the late '80s as company cars. I took one to Marrakech and back as part of the inaugral Plymouth-Dakar challenge (we didn't have enough time to do the whole thing).
Top shed, ours was £295 with 150k on her, cruised well, did high 20's mpg and oversteered beautifully on £25-a-corner remoulds
Roads are great - well worth a road trip.

The Granada was the first car on the UK market to have ABS standard across the range. The earliest car in the UK with standard ABS I can think of was the Mercedes 500SE in 1980MY. It was extra on other 'S' Class models. My favoutite Granada is by far the MK2, but the MK3 is a product of its time and I like that.

Hmm, you may be right there, this was quite a while ago, a quick Google has revealed nothing.
Somewhere in one of many boxes of old car mags/brochures i have got the issue of Cars and Car Conversions that featured that Escort although i do remember it being a mid metallic blue....... but the mention of a second one that was red rings a bell....The prototype car was built at the Karmann factory in Rheine and used the Cosworth FB V6 with an MT75 box and was only rwd. They didn't spend much at all on development and although the FB was heavier than the YB that weight increase. was offset by lack of a front diff/prop and driveshafts.
They had to hack the engine bay a bit to get the V6 and rad in.
It wasn't so much the production cost ( Ford already had obligations of supply with Karmann who built the bodies and Cosworth for the engines ) but more the insurance companies clamping down on higher performance cars and none of the marketing people would sign up for it. They would only have had to sell a thousand cars or so to have made it a go-er
