That's great, but the terms he's using mean nothing whatsoever (other than to him) - they're part of a long, tired cliche...

It's not uncommon with people who drive cars and try to express their thoughts either - Evo magazine disappeared up it's own arse YEARS ago talking about 'nuggety' handling (like nuggets of what?) and allsorts of other terms which are almost entirely meaningless...

Let's talk 'analog' too - that 911 has PASM - electronic damper control - hardly 'analog' is it??? It might not be the 'Eurofighter' level of intervention that a 599GTO has, but it's NOT analog - nothing made in the last 15 years is, really...

It's also a massive cliche to keep talking about "the last..." of anything - there's always something better to come - always - which covers my point from the PoV of those who've spent a tonne on a 3.8 and are thinking 'oh st' too smile

p.s. lovely car - it's just not the 'last of' anything, really...
well I think my first of the breed almost qualifies for analogue...
mk1 996 GT3
real springs & dampers
no TC
throttle cable (!)
but it does have ABS...(hangs head in shame)

but I certainly would have the 4.0 (aswell...)

You can substitute it with you doing all the work or the car doing all the work, if that helps.
Well, I went to a bunch of car dealers recently. And I have to tell you, I still havent found a car for sale yet that will steer, accelerate, and brake, all by itself.

To this day, every car I've ever driven still requires me to provide the inputs. Its just that the cars are getting better.

I dont mourn progress.

Correct but the inputs required in some modern cars are miniscule.

Brake from a 3 figure speed in a 458 for a slow first gear corner and all you have to do is pull the left hand paddle towards you and hold it there while you brake. Engine speeds and gear changes are all matched perfectly for you by the ECU.

You need slightly more inputs in a manual car like the RS to get the same results.

I completely lost track of all these 911 variants years ago, there must be hundreds of them! Surely the GT2 RS is the ultimate 911 tho?

Rubbish - the American Mustang was the last of the true analogue horses. Everything since then has been tamed to the point that anyone can ride them at speed.
biglaugh that makes the last horse I rode a renault megane then...

excellent car mind, sort of see what OP is getting at even if it is dotted with the odd cliche

Hmm, well we've had automatic cars for years, so you dont even have to pull a left hand paddle. Compared to that, this means the 458 is MORE analogue.

In all seriousness, who really cares? We went from drum brakes to disc. Progress. We went from disc to ABS. Progress.

We've gone from disc to ceramic. Progress.

Even the 458's have stopped making manuals at all.

Its just more and more goodness. Cars today go, stop, and handle better than ever, and yet we have people moaning more and more.

And what makes me laugh, is that they then put on a pompous attitude, as if they can stop progress with their whining alone.

Get over it people. Failing that, go and buy the dinosaurs you all seem to love so much.

I look back at cars in the past, and just think they're "quaint", at best.

You seem to forget that enthusiast cars such as this are built to satisfy us, and not simply provided as something to get from A>B with minimal effort.

Progress doesn't always have to equal technical advancement.

Did you ever drive a 7 GT3 variant? This is neither no frills nor trackday only. I'm using my 7.2 GT3 as a daily drive, it is absolutely easy to live with day to day. The RS is no more hardcore than that. The ride is even more compliant.

If you want harsh, no frills and track day then you need to go down the Radical (or similar) route...

you think? Last time I saw a couple of RS's at bedford they were black flagged for noise levels. Sent packing, no refund. Standard exhausts.....
I've tracked Bedford numerous times in my 997.1RS and never got black flagged along with other 997RSs, so did many 997GT3s
