Forgot to tell my V8 story.
When at Merc a local chap wanted to trade from a W126 to the (then) new W140 S Class. His idea of what the W126 was worth was rather inflated and a deal couldn't be done. He left in a huff.
A few weeks later he rolled onto the forecourt in an Audi V8 proudly telling my manager how Audi had given him the part-ex value he wanted. Anyway, fast forward a year or so and he's back in the showroom wanting to get back into a Merc. My boss checked the book, made some calls to traders and gave a fairly low bid on the V8 as nobody wanted to underwrite it and we didn't want to attempt to sell it.
His face was a picture, but that car had been hit hard by depreciation as the A8 was on the horizon. His only option was to lower his budget and he ended up swapping for a C280 Elegance. Ooof.
Hi - after 10 years still keep the W126 500sel. sold the W140 S500 last month and lost no money, keep the RS2 forever as I like 4 wheel drive (torsen split) sold ur Quattro two year ago after 19 years and last month bought BMW 540 tourer as I am partial to V8s. Did we go to the same church I wonderWhen at Merc a local chap wanted to trade from a W126 to the (then) new W140 S Class. I want it now. How do you think the insurance companies will react when I ask if they'll insure an 18yo me in it?

You: I'd Like to Insure an Audi V8 4.2
Them: I'll type in the details. And how old are you sir.
You: I'm 18
Them:
But not impossible if you search around for long enough.

Something like this is so off the wall for an 18yo, it would be uber cool.

People's trading disasters might be an interesting thread. I know a woman who went, in under two years, from nearly new C180 Avant Garde (£18K's worth) via an old A4 and an automatic Beetle to MG ZR CVT (a Mars bar's worth). Vaporised the best part of £18K to avoid paying £200 for some electronic thing on the Benz. When at Merc a local chap wanted to trade from a W126 to the (then) new W140 S Class. I know what you mean though, sometimes your head overtakes your heart and you decide that 3 weeks abroad each year, a wardrobe rammed with nice garments and a nice house have to take priority - I'm deservedly going to get banned from this website for posting this comment!
You can take a 3 week holiday, fill a wardrobe with nice clothes and buy a nice house for £895 less haggle+£110 tax)!?Well done...
Same chap appears to be selling a 500 SE for £995 as well

Sorry i shouldn't have posted i was thinking out loud but i think you misunderstood my point anyway which was sometimes in life rightly or wrongly you don't follow your heart and you buy something that is more practical and isn't a money pit and spend your excess cash on other things rather than constantly give your hard earned to the local mechanic / shell garageWell done...
On a nicer, more in the spirit of SOTW note, i can't stop looking at Audi 200s now i really do want that thing, i agree with a previous post regarding the 3 VDO guages my GolF GTi (Mk1) had the same problem, which is easily / cheaply solved by buying aftermarket ones from the likes of Ripspeed etc

They put the stretch in the wrong place, or at least left the rear door in the wrong place. Getting in and out of the back seats would have required a, head down arse out, movement. Not becoming of the sort of person using the rear of that car.Tyre Smoke said:
Which, I suspect is quite good. Considering most 18yo want a Corsa/Saxo. Goes along with the TG test a series or so ago when they did best car for a new driver. Volvo 240 wasn't it?

I fully intend to get something off the wall. Keep your eyes peeled for a what-car thread sometime soonish...

Wouldn't bother servicing it....run it into the ground..for 895 even if you got 300 off the breakers for it your only down 600 quid...sheds are exactly that sheds..they aren't meant to be restored to former glory but driven into the ground and given the burial they deserve
That, that and thrice that...There are 2 types of people in the world.
The first sees a car and makes a list of the work needed to make it 'right' - this will include some oily bits, some derusting/paintwork fixes, some interior tidying etc. - they'll factor it in and buy the car and do the work.
The second are the smart ones - they buy cars from the first
Let's be honest here - a new lightbulb for this will probably cost more than your next shed

That's me! But, I enjoy doing the work needed, almost as much as driving the cars. Sometimes even make a small profit when I sell, because I am bored of it when i've done all the jobs. I have to make all my cars 'right' and that is very much part of the thrill. There are 2 types of people in the world.
