RE: Pic Of The Week: Esprit De Pwhooarr

To be honest, they are bloody awful to drive.
All turbo lag, farting wastegate and clonky gears.
They sound like an Escort and smell like a canoe.
But there is something special about them.
I have owned mine twice. In between stints in my Esprit, I owned a F328 GTS, which was a better car, but the Lotus has more character, is more eccentric and feels just as special.
Mine has covered 31,000 miles and on a good day might be worth £15,000.
The list price for the cheapest, bottom of the range Ford Focus is now £16,000....

Yes, have to agree, i drove my first Turbo when i was 22, the most exciting day ever and i was soooooo pissed off because it wasn't what i expected. It was an 84 version, the seats didn't adjust so the driving position felt awkward, but i forgot all that because you could stay committed around the corners and rev the nuts off it and it went like stink, and the noise from the wastegate, sends shivers up my spine. The later versions were certainly an improvement. I was always jealous of my older brothers as my dad used to let them drive his when they were 14 or so. We lived near to Gosfield Lab and Earls Colne Airfield so you do that back then.All turbo lag, farting wastegate and clonky gears.

I have fond memories of the Guigario shape, i remember the first time i saw him come home in one, Red with the black decals and black leather, it looked the bks. They'd always had S3 demo's but when they launched the Turbo, they got one straight away and sold loads of them. I also recall when the old man got one of the first HC's off the line, it arrived on a Saturday morning, went straight into the workshop to be PDi'd and plated, and we went everywhere in it to 'run it in'. Not too dissimilar to yours Pat, only the interior was Magnolia i recall. I absolutely love this car.
This is one of the old mans Esprits used in a photoshoot;
Taken from Mark Blanchards site, i recall it was taken by a local photographer called Alan Dench, not sure why it was taken, we only supplied the car.
