I know one of group she was in the same class as me at school. Always going on about the bloody things, stunk of them to. we never really got on after I told her to add a bit of antifreeze to her horses water bowl to stop it freezing. The school tried to make me pay the vets bill, I refused. she added the bluestar without reading the lable.
eek Are you serious? No one can be that stupid
No joke, I got in a world of st almost got kick out of the school. She almost killed the poor thing putting premixed stright into the bowl.

When driving the Chimaera through the New Forest I always give horses a wide berth at a slow speed, with the radio turned down. Even at tick over it's not the quietist car, but never had a problem and if the horses have riders I always get a thank you. I'd never pass ridden horses at speed though - if you spook a horse and it throws the rider could you live with yourself?

However if i got told to turn my car off the rider would be given a few choice words. Cheeky cow! Nervous horses should not be on the road!

The problem is nearly always the rider, not the horse. Any nervous horse should not be on the road, but the riders nervousness is transmitted to the horse and makes it worse.

There are an awful lot of complete fkwits that keep horses, they have plenty of large animal enthusiasm but very little large animal experience, knowledge or common sense. You just encounter these idiots on the road, be thankful that you don't see the rest of the idiocy that they can muster when they are off it

I don't think horses should be on the road full stop.

They should stick to jumping over brightly painted poles in the field and running (cantering)? around in circles with rope tied around their reins. Surely horses would prefer that too?

They can trot along all day and munching on the grass when they fancy a snack instead of getting in the way of the cars.

Horses....meh!

This is unbelievable! just driven the same route picking my mum up from work I
was dropping her off when it happend. So im driving along car in the distance and come over a hill and there 2 horse riders in the distance maybe 1/4 of a mile. There is a car infront (around 300 yards) slows but goes stright past them. I come, go to go past and she put her hand to stop ffs, but I stop anyway. She screams "turn your engine off this horse is scared!" I respond with the car infront drove stright past. I then recognize the other horse rider as the bh from school and put two and two together. (mum and daughter) I responded antifreeze solves scared horse. (not the best comeback I know) turn the car back on! rev the fk out it, and drop the clutch leaving a nice number 11 and you know what the fking horse didn't bat an eyelid!
Why would you try to deliberately spook the horse? Isn't that a bit stupid?

For all the horse riders on here (and I'm surprised there's so many ???) - why would you want to ride a horse on the road anyway ? Surely there's more pleasure from riding on a proper trail or path.

Do horse riders have insurance ? What the legal stance if a horse hits and damages a car ?

IMO they are PITA but always considerate towards them.

They piss me right off! I came across two women on horses a few weeks ago, late afternoon in a built up area.I was sat behind them for a few minutes untill i felt it was safe to overtake(i was in my transit van) and when i did,the one at the front looked at me as though i had just commited the crime of the century!

I was also out in my westfield a while back and somewhere during my blat i drove through a pile of horse st! I first began to notice everytime i pulled up at the lights as it was splattered all over the exhaust and burning horse st is not a very nice smell believe me! When i got home it was all down the side of the bodywork, rear arch and passenger seat.Luckily i didnt go through it with the o/s tyre or it wouldv'e been all over me.

Why are horses allowed to leave massive piles of st in the road yet when your dog does one you have to pick it up?

bks!

Classic case of read thread title, open thread, ignore post content, write a reply of complete st based on your assumptions taken from the thread title, disappear when you realise you've made yourself look like an arse.

I always without fail slow down for horses, not so much for the riders but more so for the horses which are probably terrified of the cars around them and their owners insisting the roads were for horses long before cars blah blah.

I think that nowadays horses should not be ridden on roads as theres too much traffic which could spook them. I think problems arise when they have no choice but to go on the roads to reach the bridleways though so its a difficult one.

Many years ago I came over the brow of a hill on a country lane (a a bus route, so wide enough for two vehicles to pass) and was confronted by two horses and their riders side-by-side coming towards me on my side of the road.

Stopped in time but it shook me a bit.

I'm fine about horses on the road, so long as their riders are proficient (rarely) - however a good response to her 'this horse is very nervous' (aka unfit for the road) would've been 'my wheels are about to fall off, get your horse off the road'

Did you actually do this? If so you're a compelte and utter moron. Grow up ffs and just be patient and pass them sensibly.

I'm sure it isn't fun but I see more mud/sticks/diesel/puddles/litter and all sorts of other debris and random stuff on the roads then I do horse-s**t so not sure what the problem is? And I live in rural Devon which is full of horses, maybe you should read the road a bit better and ride to a distance that you can see?

Agreed. In summary - I don't ride horses and never have done. I live in a rural part of the country with a lot of single track and high-hedge roads and yet I genuinely have never had a problem with horses on the road. they occasionally hold me up for 30seconds or so, sometimes give me a mild scare when I come round a corner to be faced with a line of horses but nothing as bad as I've had from numerous other cars/bikes/pedestrians and random wildlife.

I really, honestly don't understand the vitriol and dislike of horses on the road. I don't ride them, and don't particularly like them, but they cause me no (or minimal) grief at all and other people clearly enjoy them. Live and let live.

And those moaning maybe slow down a touch on blind bends? smile

I read most of it!! (considering it's late on a Friday night and I've had a lot of cider and whisky I thought i did well! smile)

Anyway, I do very much believe that antagonising horse riders will get you nowhere.

And I love animals so the thought of my nobbish driving (which I am guilty of in other circumstances) leading to a person or animal coming to harm, or death is just unbearable. So i creep by and wave nicely smile
