As someone who spent many years working for an auction house, the whole issue of catalogue estimates is a complex one because in reality there's only 1 rule which applies to auction.

"A item will sell for the price TWO people are willing to pay for it."

That renders all other attempts at estimation null and void - it's all about who's there on the day and how far at least 2 of them will go.

Yu are only correct if you are assuming that those 2 people are the potential buyer and the auctioneer. Think about it...but if you need any help...the other bidder may have a magnolia hue....

You're alleging that an auctioneer is taking bids 'from the wall?'??? That's very very naughty...

I'd always assumed that 'serious' auctions were mostly conducted on telephone or proxy bids - and the auctioneer 'pretends' those bids are real. In reality tho, a member of staff in the room will bid for those to make it clear what's happening - and no serious auctioneer would cook-up fake bids because they might just sell the item to the wall - and that means no income (or an embarrassing conversation with a losing bidder).

I loved working in auctions tho - best job I've ever had - I miss it, I loved the art, antiques, clocks and even cars - it was interesting - the place had an atmosphere - I'd love to do it again...

Yeah but it might not be a bargain. Cheap, yes, but a bargain???, Firstly, the detail lists the car as "strictly sold as viewed". This should start alarm bells.

The details list the engine as "non running, with mechanical state unknown". This could be a simple refurbishment, or a whole engine rebuild- lets say £15k to do this properly. The fuel injection system could be another £3k to get right.

Well be kind and say the gearbox/axle is OK, but you'll want the brakes 100%, and the suspension too- its a 150mph car weighing 2 tons, why would you skimp on these? So lets say another £1500 for those. And good luck with those inboard rear brake calipers. Bet they havent been touched in years

Then you'd have a tatty but running car which you could restore over time. Maybe a respray- full, glass out? The image of the engine shows the badly applied green paint over red (base of windscreen). Lets say £10k, assuming you'll find something nasty underneath- and you will. Maybe at the front? The front side lights are wrong for starters, and the bumper hangs wrong. Why? Has it had a front/side knock, and badly repaired? Are you really going to ignore this, or get it done properly??

The car will always look bad without new bumpers? £2k. The exhaust doesnt look standard either- £1500.

Where are we? 6k for car, £18 for engine bay, £15,000 for the rest. Of cours, you'll want the engine bay looking smart too, so lets add another £2k for general parts and fettling, and exorcising those Lucas demons.

So, for the price of a sorted one, you could have this back on the road for just £42,000...

But... dont look underneath- that could be another £10k in chassis work right there. What do you mean your mate has a MIG welder and can fabricate the parts from scratch, and can weld aluminium? Are you really sure??

Wanna know what could be waiting for you behind those shiney stainless steel sill covers and aluminium body??:

http://www.aston-v8.co.uk/strip-and-inspection.htm

Unfortunantly its an Aston- you cant really skimp on the jobs or make financial short-cuts as

a) The parts are often unique to Aston, and very expensive
b) or they are shared with other exotica- Muira brake calipers, etc
c) The lack of specialist work would count against it when you decide to sell
d) The lack of specialist knowledge could mean the overall cost per job is higher, even if the quoted hourly rate is less. They are complicated cars, made by hand which means they need repairing by hand. Off-the shelf parts need many hours of alterations before they'll fit- some specialists I know make some parts froms scratch as it can be quicker. Your mate with the MiG welder is going to takema long time finding out what's what.
e) Its a 2 ton car capable of 150mph. Why would you put inferior parts on the car
f) Its an Aston. It deserves to be treated well.
g) Its an Aston. It is likely to appreciate in the future.

But you can work on it yourself. This takes time, but you do save on labour.

Will ask Riggers to put one up. For the time being you can just get a glimpse of it sat behind the RS200.

Having driven both the Alfa SZ & the Lancia Delta S4 - the actual cars that were auctioned on Friday - i would have bought the RS200 an example of which i have also driven.

Why? Because IMO it is the better of the three cars. The Alfa is ugly, as is the Lancia, whilst the RS200 is just a very pretty car.

On the road from what i recall the RS200 was again the better car. Granted, the Alfa sounds good however it was not as good as the Ford & the same goes for the Lancia.

I know a chap who inherited his fathers Aston. It needed a respray. Then they realised the doors needed re-skinning, then a couple of other things...you know how it goes.

Anyway for paint and a little bodywork he wrote a cheque for just short of £30,000.
