........ in reality there's only 1 rule which applies to auction.

"A item will sell for the price TWO people are willing to pay for it."

That renders all other attempts at estimation null and void - it's all about who's there on the day and how far at least 2 of them will go.
Or just ONE person and a reserve (which should not be above the lower estimate).

Lots of mouth-watering cars but a 'dangerous' and, frankly, unlikely place to grab yourself a bargain IMHO! Too much money around at a place like the FofS and also 'loose' money i.e. wealthy people who can afford to splash out whimsically.

Take the Alfa SZ for example: granted its looks divide opinion although it's supposedly a great drive (and I can well believe it). However, prior to the recession (which, of course, has ironically seen classic car prices climb steadily as people seek alternative investment opportunities), most SZ's ran around the £15k-£18k mark. So, £37k for the ex-Patrick Collection car?! I'm sorry - that's mad! Pretty sure you can't get panels for it anymore and so how much driving will you risk at that price? Straight back into a carcoon, I should imagine.

About 8 or 9 years ago, I happened to be at BCA Blackbushe for one of their occasional classic car auctions when what should roll in but James Hunt's old Mercedes 450SEL with the full-monty 6.9 litre V8 - in beautiful, restored condition, new dark bronze metallic paint, fully re-upholstered buffalo hide and just looking and sounding fabulous! A real, 'needs nothing, drive away and enjoy' classic that went for £5495.00.

I didn't even have that much spare cash at the time (otherwise I'd have snapped it up there and then) but a dealer was there and he did - saw it advertised in Classic Cars for £7995 only two weeks later - still a bargain at that price. Wonder what it would have made at FofS had it been there last weekend...

Quote** (*All prices are hammer prices plus buyer's premium, exclusive of VAT.).

If this is Auction is open to the public then the VAT should be included in the price and not a seperate entity, it seem's to be the norm
to falsely misrepresent the cost of certain articles to make them appear at first glance cheaper, lot's of businesses seem to do this and it's
really annoying!

Where goods that are "Vatable" are sold directly in "open public sale" and not a closed Trade, it should be shown included at all times within in the price shown.

My Gripe of the day!

That'll be my new car then!!!

HEADLINES - PH-er buys Goodwood Bonhams car

I was actually bidding on the phone from Singapore at 1am. I am not going to see the car until September but I cannot wait. Bonhams say that the car is immaculate, engine is show condition, drives well, just re-commissioned with a full service and those glorious Hall 180-degree headers. The noise is QUOTE Absurd.

Nice one. biggrin

There was a similar Pantera at the Laon Historique Rally and it was by far the loudest car of the weekend with an insane sound. biggrin

Calm down dear, the VAT is only on the commission, not the sales price!

The Lancia shades the Ford for me, 'IF' i was a collector it would have been a must, i don't really understand why the Ford went for so much more. Home market? Essex?

1969 Ford Mustang 'Shelby' GT500 £80,700 (est. £95,000)

There's a 67 GT500 'Eleanor' advertised locally for £94,500 which thought was overpriced!
http://www.purelotus.co.uk/car-sales/ (If I had the cash I'd buy it though)

Any pictures of the 'Bonhams' GT500?

That 959 looks an absolute bargain compared to the F40, that really surprised me.

I thought 959s were fetching much more than £134k - one of my childhood (and adulthood) favorites!!!

I bought my 1964 Series 1 FHC E Type there a few years ago, a real bargain compared to todays prices - I stayed a while at Auction and agree re the bargain Aston. First lot and lots of chatter etc so low interest, my mate bombed out at just ender £5k !!
How about the AJS Porcupine, the estimate was an absolute frightener, around £300k from short sighted look, dont know what it made, however it was just as brilliant as when it first appeared - in my view.

The day an 'Eleanor' which is only under the glassfibre a basic 67/68 fastback and is 'a car from a film' makes more money than a genuine late 60s Shelby, we can all pack up and go home.

The Bonhams GT500 is a Dragon Wheels restoration and so it will be 100% top notch.
