Hmm, using 2 bays to save a dink. Yes, but I have heard of someone via a mate who actually scratched a car because they used 2 bays, it was a female and not a nice one by the sound of things.

Also been on the recieving end of demonchildren opening car car door onto my old clunker. I mentioned it to the father at the time, his response was 2 She doesn't have respect for anything" and that was that. Isn't it the fact that you have not taught the little b###ch to have any respect for other's property? Next time I hope it's some really bad tempered phsyco he encounters, then he'll teach the brat respect, once he gets out of A&E.

Not in a supermarket car park but parked as usual on the street, I came back one day to find a huge dent in the driver's door. Did the culprit leave a note? What do you think?

Dentman came out and got rid of 90% of it for a couple of hundred notes. I asked him whether someone could have done it without noticing. He laughed and said it would have made a really loud bang as the door panel would have compressed against the side reinforcement within the door cavity.

I am as purist and principled as they come, so while it's natural to be furious, the moral of the story is you just have to accept it, shrug and move on, in the end it is only you who suffers, the other party is utterly indifferent. If things have got to the stage that they can do that and quite happily not take responsibility, something's going very wrong somewhere else in their lives...

Report it to the police and then keep on pushing it. Once they get there details through then you'd be able to take them through the small claims court for the repair? Which will be huge.

It pisses me off that people treat the property of others like that.

Funnily enough i had a VW MPV ding my door last week. I dont usually take my car into town but my pushbike was in the repair shop. I tried my best to park out of the way in the far corner of the car park but naturally this seems to attract the cretins even more.

My revenge was to kick a dent in their rear passenger door before i left.

Naturally because this is PH some smartarse will ask me how i knew for certain it was that car. Well i don't, apart from the fact that the dent wasn't there when i left home, i hadn't been gone long and the fact that their plastic bump strip (ironic) lined up PERFECTLY with the dent in my car.

The people who do this usually have crumby cars themselves and don't think a dent in a car matters. Dent their car and they probably won't care or even notice.

Thanks all- interesting posts indeed. I've made a note of the points made so I'll answer them:

I have the registration number of the car. I've spent the afternoon researching and reflecting. It certainly seems that going anywhere near my insurance company is something I shouldn't do as it could get tricky with my premium next year.
I have also thought of informing the police (more below on this).

1 comment mentions the acceptance of small dings. I have to say that whilst it is fact of life that accidents happen, I felt that due to these people I have been left with damaged property- if it were not for their actions I would have a car without a dent therefore it is correct that I should pursue this without cost to me, so small claims will likely be the way to go.

I have checked the askmid site and they have insurance, although they did not offer their details. I have to be honest and say I didn't ask for them. I am 30 and so far have never been in this situation so I guess I should have asked for them - refusing to provide is an offence from what I have read.

I forgot to explain fully in my original post that I normally check the cars near me and I try to park next to cars that are in good condition and are not mpvs. This one occasion I thought I would be ok and the lure of having a space near the entrance to tesco was rather enticing! There aren't many space in this car park and it is not easy to park away from others (unlike sainsbury's where I can).

It is certainly worth me causing some noise about this to authorities although the conclusion I am coming to (and is why I am really annoyed) is the complete lack of responsibility on these people's part. I'm honest and they should be too. I know in life people have different values but when caught red handed their attitude astonished me.

It may only be minor damage but these things can cost money. I've just spend £300 getting the front bumper perfectly aligned since the car had suffered a very minor impact prior to me buying it and she was looking like new until this.

Regarding pictures- certainly I can take these of my car without a problem. The offending car has chips on the door where it caught mine, so I am sure if the police want to check it they can.

I shall give the local police a bell in the morning and explain my situation. Here in Suffolk the police are quite good with the more civil matters that crop up so I am hoping they will be helpful. At least this means I have done the right thing, even if they haven't.

Shall keep you chaps posted.

That's the problem. Parking next to anyone is a recipe for dings. I try to park as far away as I can from any other cars if I have to go to a supermarket. Home delivery is the solution. smile

had a similar thing happen to me, the attitude of the other driver annoyed me a lot more than the minor dent. The plod might not care but you can bet if you were cheeky with them and opened your car door into their car you'd probably be on a million public order and criminal damage charges.

If it happens again then film them on your phone driving off - least you can prove they were there.

The askmid site can also be used to request details to make a claim not just check they are insured.

They do charge £3.50 I think for this service.

This happened to my Sons car recently in a carpark whereby the woman opened her door against his so hard it made a big dent and broke off the mirror.

Our insurance company sorted it and third parties ins paid up.

Incidentally someone else (another woman) reversed into his car the other day then legged it. He got the reg number and this is also being settled by their ins company.

Aren't these minor dings just part of the reality in which we are all expected to live? Nothing stays pristine for ever except the garage queens - and what's the point in that?
No.

Coming soon: Tesco SMART repairs and paintless dent removal whilst you're doing your weekly shop. Self-sustaining business if ever there were one.

OP: Those people were what we call "s". They abound, unfortunately. As said previously, I think you'll be on a hiding to nothing pursuing them for a £30-35 single panel PDR, it'll indirectly cost you as much in time, stress and frustration.

If I'd been the recipient of that response rather than a "Sorry, I didn't notice" (ideally but delusionally optimistically accompanied by the handing over of a few £ in recompense), I'd have been tempted to lightly dink their car too "Verify that then, ahole." and see where it goes...

This is your problem, you thought it was "safe" to park next to a MPV. frown

MPV usually equals fat lazy ignorant people who don't care about other people vehicles and/or children who'll quite happy force a door wide open, into the side of another car.

I never ever park next to a MPV for this exact reason.
If having a dink on your car upsets you always park across two bays. Saves the heartache.
Yes, it does upset me. My £22k car is only 3 months old and if i wanted it covered in dents, then I would have ordered it with dents...

Parking across two bays just draws (unwanted) attention where people think "Look at this cock parking across two bays" and is likely to be keyed/damaged as an act of spite.

Good on you OP for taking it further. How's it all going?

If the knob that brushed you off is indeed USAF (Was the car LHD? Did it have US size plates but with a UK reg number?) and you report him for causing issues with the locals it is highly likely that he'll get in the st - the Yanks don't like to annoy the locals in their host country, they'd rather have a good rep that a bad one and would work pretty hard not to let a good rep go bad. If he is USAF and thy do nothing, take it to the local press...

Good work!

It really peeves me too when I park well out of the way, at the opposite end of the car park with tens of bays all empty in that area, only to return to find someone has parked nearly on top of me. What's that all about???
This has got to be a piss take.

Someone accidently/inadvertently puts a ding in your car and you feel the need to kick a dent in their car. Now correct me if i'm wrong but i imagine the damage caused by kicking a panel is far greater than a ding and it makes you no better than them and id argue you are more of a **** than they are.

I understand how bloody annoying it is getting parking marks and i don't for a second believe that we should accept that they happen or it's only a car and we shouldn't care but there is no point being a tt kicking cars or worse keying cars. It isn't the cars' fault that the owner can't open an close a door an if you really think these people are bothered by dings on their car you are wrong.

I'm not sure of the legal standpoint but I'd at least report the whole incident to the police. If they see it as a crime, you'll get a crime number which you can then use if you want to get the car fixed on insurance. The problem is, most dings cost less to fix than most people excess.

If you have the reg, the police can make enquiries and if they think they're in trouble, they might (small chance) offer to pay for any damage to be fixed.

It happened to me in Newcastle a few years ago. I got back to my car in a car park to find a note on teh windscreen which read something like "I've just seen a woman in a Micra, reg no xxx reverse into your car and drive off. Here's my number..."

I called the police and got a quote for my bumper to be fixed. It was something like £150. They called the woman who broke down in tears (a respectable older lady with no prior who had a mad moment) and she agreed to send a cheque. As it happens, I cashed the cheque but never did fic the car as I was planning to sell.

Making you as bad as them....
Not really imo. If they don't take responsibility for their actions then the only way they're likely to learn is by having the same done to them. Nice, honest people will always get shat on from a great height if they don't treat crap like crap.
