One point which seems to be overlooked in this thred is that

a) Cars have got much wider

b) Parking spaces haven't.

Unless you're one of the halfwits who park across two spaces.....
What's wrong with parking across two spaces?
You look like an idiot, sadly if your that worried about your car then leave it in the garage these days. Im always very carefull even when parking next to total piles of junk and always hold doors when mates get out. Sadly in life most people arn't this curteous

I'm more than happy looking like an idiot if that's what it takes to keep morons away from my car.

I always try to do it and I have a 5 year old Octavia vRS. It has happened too many times now. Opposite end of the car park from the shops, in a corner somewhere and then use the exercise! One of the benefits, the usual culprits are always fat, ignorant s who are too lazy to walk that far! biggrin

The worst I had was at the gym, two identical dents but 12 inches apart. Someone had obviously pulled into the bay, opened their door to check distance (or something), hit mine, pulled further forwards or back and then opened their door and hit mine again! I was furious, totally identical dents! frown

When I saw a women slide along someones jeep when she was trying to park, check her car and wander off i left a note on the window of the guys car. On the way out I saw him and went over to have a word. Left him my name number, explained i would do whatever I could to help. Only to watch her come out go nuts at him for even suggesting it (despite the obvious paint transfer), and then just drive off foring him to jump out of the way. I never did hear back from him, which was really gutting! frown

Tesco. It attracts them I'm afraid. You'd never get that sort of behaviour in Waitrose wink *

This is a joke FYI.

How hard do you have to tt a neighbouring car with your door to cause a dint? Depends on the car of course but I think the side panels on my Mini are pretty resilient, the old 205 I had less so. Are newer cars generally better in this respect, especially as few seem to have side rubbing strips?

This happened to my Sons car recently in a carpark whereby the woman opened her door against his so hard it made a big dent and broke off the mirror.

Our insurance company sorted it and third parties ins paid up.

Incidentally someone else (another woman) reversed into his car the other day then legged it. He got the reg number and this is also being settled by their ins company.
Just wait and see what happens at renewal time with 2 non fault claims being declared.

It's unfair but 99% chance is that his premium will rise as a result.

Had this happen to me but not in Tescos but a club stand at a car event!! Car parks next to me on grass and straight away the daughter swings open the rear door and puts a nasty ding in my otherwise dingless car. Dad walks around and denies his door had done it! Eventually after an hour or so he had the dent 'pulled' by those dent guys that were at the show. What annoyed me was his denial, especially as the door edge (when fully open ) matched the damage.

I suspect the Police will not be interested as it didn't happen on the public road so they won't consider it an accident. The store will point to the "cars parked at own risk" sign and duck any attempt to get CCTV as proof (and it's not going to show them doing damage anyway).

Your insurer will pursue a claim if you make one but it's largely your word against theirs - your passenger backs your up, theirs backs them up - you're unlikely to get a result that way.

My personal take on this would be one of

a - try to track them down using whatever means you have to hand - it's often not as hard to find someone as you think but I'll not go into too much detail...

b - just wait until you see their car in the same carpark and key the fker as you wander past it...

A clause in my insurance means this will not happen, I was keen to make sure before I claimed

I drive a van (VW Transporter) I always use two spaces .... why? When I first got it I parked in a space with an empty space to each side. When I came back both spaces had been parked in. I had to wait till one of the owners returned cos I couldn't open either of my doors wide enough to get back in it.

Just had this happen to me frown

Watched a woman open her red clio door onto my white door, obvious audible thud and red mark clearly visible. When I dared to ask why she did it she flatly denied it and said she'd been stood behind it confused and therefore it couldn't have contacted, in one of those defiant 'I dare you to argue with me' voices rage

When I then really pushed my already low level of luck further and suggested that I had just watched AND heard her doing it, she jumped in her car, locked the doors, started the engine, got on the phone, stopped the engine again, seemed to be ranting and having one of those mental moments women have...

I stood there visibly not impressed with the situation and decided to take her reg, pointed at the CCTV and tried to mouth to her I would take it further if I found damage.

I knew at this point no permanent damage had been done as far as I could see but I was so furious that she could have the audacity to lie to my face. If I had done the same thing I would have left full details, apologied profusely etc. which probably explains my incredulity.

Not everyone is bad. A lad in a Scooby crashed into my uncles are leaving a large dent and nothing done to the Scoob. My uncle wasn't in the car, was in Asda shopping and when he came out the man in the Scoob was still there waiting to apologise and give insurance details.

A lot of people would have driven off so hats off to him.

This is REALLY annoying isn't it. You could park in a bay 2 miles away from the shops, with 100 empty spaces around your car - and EVERYTIME people choose to park either side of you. WHYYYY?
I sometimes reckon that if I parked on the moon it wouldn't be many minutes until a van came and parked right beside me!

im getting really pissed off now. im getting these dings on a daily basis now. i work for tesco for 4 days a week and i always try to park my car in the quietest part of the car park or by the corner but my car is seriously messed up now. its not by any means a banger, looked well after and always clean and shiny but people still have the cheek to fk my car up all the time. worse thing is tesco for not allocating a staff car park for us, sometimes we end up parking on double yellow lines coz all the spaces are taken.

I suspect you are a fatty wink

I'm 6' and 12 stone and drive a transporter and find I can open the doors far easier than when I'm in my car as the van doors are so short.

In these car parking threads the topic of parking a decent car well away from other cars and coming back to find someone parked next to you always crops up.
I think the car next to you thinks the same as you. 'I'll park well away from the dross and hello! a decent car, I'll park next to him as he's less likely to ding my car when he opens his door'.
I know I've done it.

As great as that is, surely it will bring more unwanted attention to a vehicle than parking across two bays? I don't understand why people get so up in arms over using two bays. I think it's fine if you're not taking the last two spaces and there are loads of free spaces.

Out of interest how much do they cost?
sepends on the car, on my black 911 they arent hugely noticeable, about £50 from memory
