The last Euro trip I did 4150ish miles. The longest stints were on the way home.

Castellammare Del Golfo in Sicily, to Rome. Approx 616 miles but took around 12 hours.

Then Rome to the Baden-Baden in Germany. 700 miles. Again, around 12 hours.

Then from Baden-Baden, back to oxford. 582 miles over around 10-11 hours.

Some solid 3 days those were, all in the Mk1 Octavia VRS I had at the time!

Longest for me is 725 miles in one day from Frejus in the South of France to Caen for the ferry. It was back in 1999 in a 1982 Morgan 4/4 4 seater with our 9 year old son reading Terry Pratchet in the back seat all the way. We started at 5am and arrived at 7pm - roof down all the way of course!! Not sure I'd want to do it again now!

Longest stint behind the wheel without a break was this weekend, Cornwall to Norfolk, 6 hours. I've done Norfolk to south of France, but short stops every few hours, this was done over 24 hours.

Back in 1994 I drove from Latina (South of Rome) to Dunkirk Ferry port (before the days of the Chunnel) in one hit, about 1100 miles. I left Latina at 1pm and was in Dunkirk at 5am.
Terrible traffic near Milan and was chatting to a bloke in a van from Dunstable of all places as we queued for the Autostrada toll...
On one stop for fuel, in Luxembourg (cheap), I had to jump out and run away from my car as an articulated lorry driver came within 10ft of driving over the car (Porshce 944). Luckily he saw me waving frantically.....

Had to wait two hours for my ferry then Ramsgate to Luton.

I'm not sure what I was on back then but now when I leave the London area to drive to Scotland I get sleepy after a couple of hours lol...

Drove from Newcastle to Audi HQ in Inglostadt to deliver a computer and 4k screen.

Set off at about 6 from Newcastle and arrived at the hotel in Calais at 1am via the Eurotunnel.

Set off from Calais at 9am and arrived in Inglostadt at about 7pm.

Longest stint was approximately 600 miles from Calais Eurotunnel to Audi HQ in Inglostadt.

The over riding memory was the last hour in Germany, dark and cold, barely able to hold onto the steering wheel. Not advisable.

Did the reverse journey the following day.

A very stupid 1100 mile trip from Lyon to Scotland.

Left Lyon around 10am and arrived in home at 2am. I did have a small break waiting for the tunnel but apart from that roadworks and traffic jams and just the normal stuff. Thank god for redbull.

About 550 from south wales to the 'ring, but a slight cheat as there was a delay on the tunnel on the way down. I'm ok in the daylight but night driving these days kills me.

I've done London to Belgrade Serbia a few times. It's 1,200 miles and my record is 12hrs overnight about 7 or 8 years ago. I did it in 17 hours last year (traffic is much worse now) and was a mega slog. Nice scenery though!

My own mille miglia back in 2007 - Florence, Venice, Florence, Dusseldorf in 22 hours, slightly more than 1000 miles. Then a plane to Istanbul and a bit more there. 34 hours without shutting my eyes overall.

Hi Pistonheads,

As I’m a british sports car enthusiast, and I love honest car reports, I’m reading here since 2007, but haven’t yet registered or posted something here, so here is my first post:

April 2013

On the way home from Brna(Korcula) to Schwaebisch Hall in a smart for two convertible cdi(Best seats I experienced in a car), 1340km(832mi) non-stop in 16 hours.

August 2013

On the way back from Syktywkar(Russia) to Schwaebisch Hall home, on the KTM LC8 Adventure bike, in 79 hours, about 4000km(2485mi) in one stint, stopping only for fuel, and 5 hours of sleep per day, eating during the ride. Riding from 5 am in the morning until midnight on sometimes not existing roads. I had to hurry, because I had to go back to work.
This is by the way how I learned riding a bike, made my licence when I was 18, never been riding a bike until 28, then a friend convinced me buying a bike, I purchased a second hand KTM, without a test ride, as I couldn’t ride it and was a bit scared of it. After my last exam, I jumped on the bike and went through Scandinavia to Russia(Total 8000km). On the way back, I was in a hurry…

On the way to Russia, I met a Russian guy making a break in his Ural Side Car Bike near St. Petersburg, he looked very exhausted. He showed me some pictures of his trip… Well, he has only 2 weeks of vacation per year. Once a year there is a side car bike meeting in Wladiwostok(Far East Russia). He is riding an entire week on his bike trough whole Russia(9514km one way, 5911mi), attending the meeting for one day and then riding 5911mi all the way back. He is not really sleeping, only stopping for fuel or when the bike is broken an needs to be repaired, that’s his rest. Paris Dakar Rally is a piece of cake compared to this.
When it comes to long distance drives or rides, are Russians made out of solid wood, as they are used to travel huge distances since young age just to visit relatives on the weekend for one day and then drive back home another 600mi on not really existing roads, in cars, that are far, far away from being comfortable. Very, very impressive stuff. I couldn’t do that.

December 2015

On the way back from a Marocco Road Trip in my Natural Gas VW Caddy, to make it home on time for Christmas from Lissabon, Nazare to Schwaebisch Hall stopping only for Natural Gas, 29 hours, 2400km(1491mi). It took me so long as I haven’t been using toll roads, due to lack of money. Gas consumption 4,5 kg Gas for 100km.
The most comfortable and relaxing car I ever owned. Currently I’m driving a 650i convertible, so I have something to compare.

Currently I’m living in Dubai and preparing myself for a roadtrip for an indefinite period, either on my KTM 690 Enduro, or a Subaru. I’m not sure yet what to choose.

June 2016

My friends and me did a comfy 50% offroad 3600km road trip from Bishkek in Kirgyzstan to Pamir Highway and back in two weeks.
But on the way there, we met two guys from Ukraine first on the Afghan border first and then later a couple of times, as our roads crossed each other many times, or either they had a puncture, or we.
They have also being on a two weeks vacation, but they have been riding there all the way from home(Kiew) on 20 year old 125cc Honda bikes. Without proper gear and helmets.

Longest stint is about 850 miles (via chunnel). This was April 2014 and the route was Littleborough (Greater Manchester) to Kiel (Germany). And following day a much shorter drive from Gothenburg to Karlstad

This was done in a GT86 with our dog (I drive the pup and the wife flies with our daughter!). I set off at about 1am (local time), 5am chunnel and got onto the 18:30 Kiel to Gothenburg Ferry with plenty of time to spare.

Doing similar in a couple of weeks for Christmas with the family (sister in law lives in Sweden). So... Littleborough to Flensburg (Germany). Then after a night stop over, Flensburg to Karlstad, (Sweden). I couldn't get space on the ferry for the journey up, but on the return I have a cabin on the Gothenburg->Kiel ferry. Again this is with our dog, but in a Mazda 6 Sport Tourer (diesel fwd family-friendly excuses etc). Snow tyres fitted!

  • Day 1 880 miles
  • Day 2 540 miles

When I did the trip the first time the thing I didn't anticipate was the toilet stops, you get tired, so sip drink water, then nearly pee your pants waiting for the next rest stop!
