A neighbour of mine has one of these in the glorious "loud" red with gold BBS wheels and a matching "G60" number plate. Fantastic sounding car and used on a regular basis to his place of work.

He is a Jaguar / Aston Martin mechanic and the condition of the car reflects this. It looks as good today as when it would have rolled off the production line biggrin

Drove what I believe was a 5 door one of these back around 1988 at Chobham circuit. I was there to take part in an article with my Mini for a National Magazine and the editor turned up in it, as it was on demo. Seem to remember it was in light blue, left hooker and was on German plates - not sure if it was a special from VW or just a press car but it went very well! Absolutely positive it was a 5 door, G60 and 4-wheel drive and it had a rectangular, blue VW Motorsport badge or something similar on the grill.

Also had the chance back in the 80's to exchange company vehicles with a colleague who had a G60 Corrado - that was also very quick and at the time, a nice design.

You can't beat the sound of a G Lader on toothed pulleys. I've got it's little brother, the Polo G40 and it's just a great bit of kit if you can stomach the charger rebuilds every 10k biggrin

Always loved these cars, ever since I first saw a black one. I'd be quite happy buying that as a dry weather toy, I bet it's a hoot. More homologation specials should be making it to market, WRC really needs to go back to production cars.

Wow didn't realise that Rallyes are changing hands for quite so much. Last time i was looking at them 4-6k seemed to be the going rate for a work in progress through to a show car.

There are (as far as i know) 2 that have had right hand drive conversions and there are more an more Rallyes sporting VR6T/20VT conversions which on the one hand if done properly can be good as it enables you to go chasing BIG hp figures but it detracts from what the car is about and the unique character of the G60 engine. Anyone who thinks the 160hp is low and doesn't offer enough of a gain over a 16v with 140hp should drive both. The difference the charger makes in the midrange is incredible. Even with just basic modifications you can get to a reliable 200hp.

10k for a 'bargain' rally special????
I bought a import 1995 celebrtation '555' Impreza with 42,000 miles on it for half of that!
There are cheaper ways to get your rally thrills!!!
The problem with this is that 99.9% of people see an Impreza an think rally replica/wannabe an very few would be able to tell one of the hundreds of limited edition models from a base model WRX so no I don't think the two are comparable in that respect.

These are getting pretty rare now in standard spec hence the price. A little secret... VW actually made a couple of 16V G60 Rallye's with 210BHP which was out of the Golf Lmited. VW have one in their museum which made an appearance in EVO last year at the launch of the new Golf R. I still preferred my G60 Edition One over the Rallye though.

Lee.
Andy likes this.

The way to go with the Rallye was the VR6. x2 if possible biggrin
I apologise in advance for a) the wheels, and b) the colour. But the theory is sound biggrin

I went through a spell of 3 x Corrado VR6's and the best one was serviced by JMR (John Mitchell Racing) in West Sussex near Arundel. John had a 16vG60 Corrado that was pushing out over 300bhp with individual throttle bodies - sounded amazing! Think that was sold for £7,500 4ish years ago with BBS 17's, Porsche brakes, FK's, Milltek custom exhaust and a very nice original leather interior. Corrado VR6 and G60 > Any Golf MK2 in my opinion

Yes correct, one of 70 made. 210BHP standard from 16V with blower. RARE! An underground cult car, to have driven one must have been special in 1989, fair play.

I think VW only made about 190 of them.

Ahhh explains it then. Always wondered exactly what it was (memory going now!)I do remember I was told to go very careful with it and then he chucked the keys at me and let me have 20 mins on the outer circuit on my own! I seem to think it didn't have any big arches or give away wheels on it, quite a 'Q' car.

Googled and yes, that's the kind of beasty, colour was different I'm sure:

Thanks for clearing that up!!!

As far as I know the Wolfsburg edition is any VW that people want to try an add value to. Its like saying a Escort Xr3i is a Dagenham edition and some how different to every other escort built in the same factory.

For what it's worth nearly all mk2 golfs in the UK were built in Wolfsburg and the only official wolfsburg badged cars were sold in the North American market. The Rallye on the other hand wasn't

The Golf LTD is incredibly rare now. Around 5 years ago there were 2 or 3 of them at a couple of VW shows around the country, of which a husband and wife used to own one each if I remember rightly. Around 18 months ago one went up for sale at £18k.

Love the look of these cars.

They sort of remind me of the old E30s, with the boxy, flared arches!

Something different, and, very cool.

All the 210bhp Golf G60 Limiteds were metallic black 5drs with black leather, the small bumpers, the pale blue piping and the BBS split-rims.

Anything in a different colour has presumably been re-sprayed.

Used to work with a chap who had one of these, and it looked a lot nicer in the flesh than the pics shown here. I seem to remember him taking over three months to source a replacement panel after someone parked into him.
