FWIW Performance VW magazine's editior, Elliot Roberts, owns one and is now reviving it (he appears to have sotred it outsdie in a field for a couple of years...). Expect to see it featured in the magazine.

A word of warning for the 'Modified' thread followers, Roberts does have form.

The golf limited wasnt a golf rallye, it was a 5 door G60, a proper wolf in sheeps clothing, they even put the small bumpers on it rather than the big gti bumpers.

I do love the rallye but thats a pretty low spec one, no leccy windows and it doesnt have the lovely recaro sports seats either. Keep it supercharged but stick an eaton charger on there instead of the g ladder. A few tend to be found with the 20v turbo unit now aswell.
So you will change this original 1H engine if you "would" buy this car.
with 139.000 km on it? for a 20vt STRANGE..

its true it's a quite basic rallye but very expensive in that time.so that will be the reason that this one is quite basic...

true that I spotted it in this months PVW. The car is looking a shadow of its former self, it's odd because when Elliot first imported it he spent quite a fair bit of money getting it sorted and as you say it now looks like it's been sat outside a long time - I do hope the sills are still in one piece!!

If it is fully rebuilt id hope it is to the same standard but perhaps not quite as modified as the last PVW project rallye which was sprayed Audi Nimbus Grey and had some rather dubious add ons like a BMW shark fin aerial.

I wouldnt change the engine no, but I'm sure there was a few conversion going about to replace the g ladder supercharger with an eaton supercharger, but if I was to buy YOUR car I'd keep as it is. If I was to buy one that had been modified or require work id consider the 20vt lump as its an easy conversion in the golf, if you get a ko4 turbo unit you can run upto 270bhp straight away, over 300 with a hybrid turbo, or go silly stick a GT30 and aim for 400bhp, and you've got the 4wd to put the power down too. All depends on what you want from the car, some people like to maintain a car as it was from the factory which I agree with, but theres also the side of me that would want a my rallye to have more power.

The rectangular lights spoilt it so it's hilarious to see miodified cars ruined by adding them. (IMHO).

More homologation specials should be making it to market, WRC really needs to go back to production cars.
Yeah, do they even have homologation cars these days? (well, for the last few years prior to this season where I assume the new breed of small WRCs *might* have homologation requirements).

At least the Golf Rallye was a proper homologation special (as with the Integrale, Cossie Escort, GT4 from the same era).

I get the impression that the more recent Impreza, Focus & Lancer Evo models, other than visually resembling the competition cars, have about as much in common as what a 1985 Delta S4 had with a production Delta LX. Barely more than a name.

True its a heavy car compared to the "normal" 16v G60 is more my style to keep it in "the same time"

But the synchro is weak is the opinion of several specialists. with alot of power and torque.. a risk...

The G-lader is a verry addictive sound.. supercharger is also cool but g-lader rules for me (without the silencer in the airfilter)

Focus, you would be more or less right, Subaru and Evo less so

These are getting pretty rare now in standard spec hence the price. A little secret... VW actually made a couple of 16V G60 Rallye's with 210BHP which was out of the Golf Limited. VW have one in their museum which made an appearance in EVO last year at the launch of the new Golf R. I still preferred my G60 Edition One over the Rallye though.

Fantastic car I also had one identical to yours.Bought it because it was faster, cheaper and less complicated than the rallye.

I am not a fan of it's looks at all.
Note I do like the big bumper 16v but those funky headlight blocks urgh.

Anyway as it happens there is one in reading usually parked near to the vw and Audi dealership red iirc seen it every day this last week and I did think boy is that very tatty - it is poorly looked after IMHO.

Anyway that aside it's too pricy too slow LHD slow no pedigree.

Always liked the Rallye.

There is a chap just round the corner from where I live who has an absolutely immaculate, standard example tucked away in his garage with less than 30,000kms on the clock.. I suspect it'll be worth a fair few quid in another 10 years or so!

Funny, despite being an avid mk 2 fan, just never had the urge for a Rallye, on the face of it so good but the looks dont grab me, think its those headlamps.

The original wheel is leagues nicer and to someone who would be after these cars originality would be paramount.

Asbt the G40 more of a success ?

That held the highest average speed over 24 hours 131mph from a STD production car
And also didn't it do rather well racing?

It is also a hugely popular track slag these days full roll cages used for racing not odd days.
