Get a proper diagnostic guy on the job.

It's not just about reading fault codes, nowadays any garage or grease monkey can do that for you, it's about doing some proper testing to see what is causing the fault. If the symptom is there most of the time most of the suggestions (guesses) that have been given on here should be pretty easy to rule out.

Thread update - I know many of you will be waiting with baited breath wink

Garage 1, mobile mechanic, Pistonheads and myself all failed to diagnose correctly, garage 2 was tried and after a new water pump, thermostat & housing, fan belt, and all is well again - wish I knew how they diagnosed that for future reference.

Glad it's fixed thumbup

Still can't understand how any of those parts that were swapped out would make any difference to a rough running engine though!

Hmmm, that is a bit odd, unless the coolant temp sensor was faulty (and is in the stat housing and got changed as well) ??
