I managed 43.9mpg from a 1.6 TDCi Focus on a 600 mile trip a couple of days ago, so I don't think I'm a naturally economic driver The paperwork in the glove box suggested it should be doing about 74mpg on extra-urban cycle...
As much as that?!I had a 1.6TDCI LX estate a couple of years back as a stop-gap whilst waiting for a new car order to arrive - I was seeing the wrong side of 40mpg from it - my 'best' brim to brim average was just over 35mpg.
Absolutely gutless - had to cane it everywhere.
I see a few have mentioned the Suzuki Swift GTi.
I loved mine, great little pocket rocket, G118TNC - whereforeartthou now?
That must be about 1988/89 I reckon.
100bhp and not much weight, great fun - and a phallic gearstick that amused all my friends. Memories of a spirited run back from a party in Kippax to Burscough for last orders at the bar... "You'll never make it" they said. We did!
Memories also of spinning it on a country lane at not far off three figures. The folly of youth! Here's your bag of experience & one of luck, try to fill one before the other empties eh? Only some minor damage to the cosmetic sideskirt got Dad who was in the trade to fettle that while I flew off for a lad's holiday the next day
I'd LOVE a go in an as-new one of those now to see how quick it actually was with the benefit of a few more miles under my belt...

For GTti main plan is full restore to almost standard just have Turbo Thomas down pipe and air filter. All else should stay same, if I want a truly fast car I'll buy one . Apart from recon engine has forged internals.
The last owner broke it and I'm fixing it

I have had four of these! Two grey and two white. Tremendous cars. Obviously time, rust and lack of maintenance has killed a lot of them. If I had a garage to keep it in I'd have another. The last owner broke it and I'm fixing it

My brother had a Nissan Cherry Turbo and he dusted every hot hatch there was - only a Suzuki Swift GTi gave him a really hard time - and the Cherry had 15 bhp over the Swift.I loved mine, great little pocket rocket, G118TNC - whereforeartthou now?

My last car was a 1.8 Yaris, they are quite uncommon. I had a 1.3 Yaris before that and loved it so upgraded to the 1.8.
I hate to admit it but it was a disappointment, the steering rack was severely limited by Toyota so they could fit those wheels on, so much so that they would not publish the turning circle in the brochure. The 1.8 engine was, in my opinion, too heavy for the car and caused pretty significant understeer under hard cornering.
On the plus side the engine was beautifully smooth, dual VVTI with good torque. The 0-60 time wasn't too good but 30-60 and onwards felt very strong.

Here's two to play with :
VX Cavalier SRi - circa 1984 or so. Two-tone paint, lovely Recaros, humongous tyres, (for it's day), and lovely to drive, (ditto) and 115bhp from it's 1.8; quite respectable in 1984. Not seen one for years. Mine was A191 SHW. Red over Charcoal.
Fiat 128 3P. Cracking little bit of kit. Grippy as all get out and an engine that just begged to be redlined. Smile-a-mile..........until it broke !
