on a newish white 6 series on the M3 the other evening. Wonder if the same person owns BUY1 that I saw on a (IIRC) 7series in Bracknell recently. I'm fairly sure BUY 1 and BUY 2 belonged to an old established Jaguar dealer in Guildford for years, but sadly the garage's name has slipped my mind and searches have revealed nothing so far. Plan B - ask big bro, he remembers stuff like that.

The famous plate was BUY 12 owned by Coombes of Guildford and probably most often seen on their Jaguar Mk 11 raced by Graham Hill

FUBAR said: I thought BUY 1 (and possibly BUY 2) belonged to BMW GB You're thinking of 1 BMW and 2 BMW which they own. Coombes and Sons (Guildford) Ltd owned BUY 1, BUY 3, BUY 12, BUY 1B and OWN 1. They would have transferred to Vines of Guildford when they were bought out. However, BUY 1 is definately on the raced Jag still, but as a show plate I believe, as it is never driven on the road.

For those of you interested, the reg X1 is going to be auctioned off in the next few weeks. The last number one that was due to go to private auction went for a publicly undisclosed sum, as it sold prior to the event.

Tom Hartley recently bought it but also recently sold it I believe? Perhaps the new buyer thinks he bought it cheap and is going to offer it to auction... Nice bit of business if it exceeds his purchase price!

Yes, big bro to the rescue, the Jaguar dealer were Coombs of Guildford - as reported elsewhere on this page - and it was BUY 1 and BUY 12 I was thinking of. John Coombs was a racing driver in the fifties and also an entrant for twenty years with many racing drivers driving for him; Jack Brabham and Graham Hill among them. His race colour was (is?) Dove Grey. He retired to the South of France but still enters cars for the Goodwood Revival. He must be 90-ish now. Top bloke.
