A couple of months ago I wrote off my pride and joy, my mk4 1.4 golf. I've had charge of one of my dads vans since then, as a run around but really want to get myself a new car now.

I'm 18 and have a crash under my belt (although it wasn't deemed my fault it will still bump up the insurance a little) I want something sporty looking with anything up to a 1.6 petrol or 2.0 non turbo'd diesel. I've been looking at mk5 golfs recently, 1.6s with a gti body kit on but the hold their value, I don't want to be spending 6k on a car with 70k miles on the clock.

Anyone been in my place before and/or have any good advice for me on what to get, any ideas considered. A link to cars you've seen in the classifieds or to more spec on the cars elsewhere would be great? I have a budget of up to 6k.

Cheers

You are going to struggle to insure anything you would want to be seen dead in I think at 18 with a crash. Maybe look to a classic?

I can get it through my dads work insurance for £400 as long as its a 1.6 or less petrol or a 2.0 or less non turbo'd diesel. Already agreed this with the insurance company.

Have a look at Swift sports or renaultsport twingos if you are limited to a 1.6, both are well handling and come with a decent spec.

Focus 1.6, MG ZR 105, Fiesta Zetec S, Polo 1.4 16v, Polo GTI, Lupo GTI, Suzuki Ignis Sport to name a few.

That's if the insurance company will insure you on some of those, they might 'forget' that they said up to 1.6 as these may be deemed 'sporty'. But any will no doubt be better to drive than a 1.4 Mk4 Golf.

I think Mazda do a little 2-seater roadster that might fit the bill?

Step away from the idea of a 1.6 Mk 5 Golf, they are slow and not very economical.

Go for a 1.6 Focus, run it for a couple of years and build up NCD, then get something nice smile

Certainly no bigger than a Golf confused

Am I right in thinking an Ignis Sport is 1.5? They're meant to be cracking cars, and underrated too so fairly cheap if I'm right smile

Mine is on 36.8 mpg and has been for a month, on tesco momentum I should add though.
