No stacks in my regular scrappy but you do get to wander around and take off the parts you want.

Many a fond memory accompanying my dad as a kid to get bits for whatever jalopy he was running at the time. Teetering piles of cars, jagged edges on mangled panels, and squeezing through gaps that would challenge an accomplished caver. All the time followed by a curious, outwardly friendly but "whatever you do, don't try and fuss her" Alsatian dog.
Always handy for stripping fuse boxes of fuses, lights of bulbs and other useful stuff you could squeeze in a coat pocket.
I haven't seen one of these places for years. The scrappy I still occasionally use has all the bits off the car and on the shelf, cleaned up, bagged and tagged, and sold with a warranty.

I do miss the wander-around type of scrappy.
You could find all sorts of bits on other BL cars that looked like they could be made to fit a Mini. But you needed to see them before you bought them. Also, taking a part off the car yourself gave you a good insight into how to fit it onto your car.
When I was building my kit car, they were ideal when you were searching around for a vital but non-specific part. For example, I needed a windscreen wash bottle with built-in pump. it needed to fit within a certain space, but other than that... Got one off of some sort of Honda that fitted the bill.
Now I would have to know exactly what make, model and year of car I wanted the part off of, so they could find it on the shelf.

i loved going to the local scapyard. i relished the challenge of clambering over wet car bodywork in boots freshly covered in a mix of water, oil and sundry other liquids. I didn't realise that at the time of my later visits this was hidden away in a corner....
recognise it?
Is that a blue Ferrari 400 bottom right? Probably not Ferraris greatest hour, but still...........recognise it?
Nice to see some old school ones still exist, that health and safety hasnt got them all.
We need progress and really they were pretty dangerous places with horrendous ecological impact but its nice for some to keep going, Banger Racing is another last bastion of a health and safety free world, where men are men, who think nothing of welding without a mask, fag in mouth underneath whiats left of a Nissan Primera swinging from a hiab, brings a tear to my eye, and probably theirs a few hours later.

I used to spend many happy days at the scrappy at Pease Pottage on the A23 when I was in my teens.
They used to stack them four high IIRC.
Always used to come back with more replacement parts than I originally went for. There were usually parts that were in better condition
than those on my car.
Always enjoyed sitting in the big old MK10 Jags and Rovers at the bottom of the pile. They were usually complete because no one wanted them.
It's still there, and you can still wander round taking stuff to bits. They don't stack them anymore unfortunately. They used to stack them four high IIRC.

I'll start with my local yard - Hoppers Salvage, Electric Avenue, Witton, Bham. Always a good range of about 50-60 cars - mk4 astras, jags, MR2s, foci, mondeos, vectras, puntos, vans, audis (80/A3/A4 stuff), VWs (passats/golfs),ford KA's, fiestas, saxo, corsas, fiat coupes, bravos/bravas, volvos (S40/V40, 1.8, 2.0, T4s etc), alfas, escort, allsorts stock changes every day.
I'm gonna rock down there right now! Takes BMW twin tone horn to the sales desk.
What's it off mate
I took it off that BMW 5 series
Twenty five quid mate
Oh I've not enough cash I'll put it back.
Goes back in when young lads at desk.
What's it off mate
I took it off that old Honda
Call it a fiver mate
Ok thanks
Jedi mind control at its best.

My local one (Chris Watson and Sons) has millions of cars piled up high. I'd be there every other day emptying my wallet if they'd let me walk around. Picked up all sorts of OEM extras for my Micra there, bit pricey considering they have about 20 Micras there.
Also find Babington in Leeds great, stock changes all the time though. They let you walk around at will, dirt cheap.

What Thin Lizzy album was it btw?
Did we get an answer to that? The one nearest my brother won't let him in. Said 'We've not got any of those, you're not coming in'.
Luckily my 350Z was blessed with a Tape player, I can match the tracks to a studio album !

My local scrappers did a bit of that, although I've not been in for a couple of years; best to do the haggling before you go to the effort of wrestling whatever you want from the reluctant grasp of the rusty bolts. One time I didn't do that the git at the desk wanted £30 for a knackered Corsa steering wheel(I only wanted the hub to make an adapter for a Mountney), so I tossed it back on the pile and walked off. What's it off mate

Usually wrapped-up in Health and Safety nonsense
io doubt there are many scrappies who have 8 million quid in ready cash to hand ... as that is the bung you'd need to get someone to keep quiet aobut their shoddy practices breaking someone's neck or giving them a serious head / brain injury.
I went to Bridges, Pease Pottage (bottom of M23) yesterday for a replacement avensis aerial.
In the past they 've just said to put some change in the charity box for small stuff, but I was amazed when the chap rang it up on a till (electrical - misc) as £2 and even gave me a receipt!!
Next thing I know they will have ditched the carcinogenic burgers for a salad bar.
I suspect tills due to tighter scrap metal / waste regulation.
Still a good range of cars but mostly post 2000 now

I can recommend Wells and Moorhouse in Meltham W.Yorks, proper old fashioned scrappy, think they only pile cars 2 high, you have to ask to go down the yard. Too much Elf and Safety.
My favorite was Cooper Bridge in Brighouse just off the M62, spent many hrs in the early 80's with my dad looking for bits for Marinas or some old ford. Used stack at least 4 high and the trick was to get home without getting covered in petrol or getting your clothes ripped .

Cooper Bridge was always more expensive than those 2 scrappies if you headed towards mirfield from there, I was there a lot in the late 80's getting bits for my first car (mk2 escort that I paid £135 for!)My favorite was Cooper Bridge in Brighouse just off the M62, spent many hrs in the early 80's with my dad looking for bits for Marinas or some old ford. Cooper Bridge is rubbish these days, all on shelves
