RE: New Porsche 911 Caught Naked
Discussion
I used to have a crap job which paid crap for a crapload of hours and grief (I was a Porsche car salesman, funnily enough). So, I got out of the business, completely retrained and now I own a 997 rather than selling them. Much better. So, don't go moaning if you can't afford one, because it really is as simple as deciding to do something about it. Fact. It might take time but it's do-able.
If you don't like the 911, do us all a favor and go bh about something else. It's so boringly predictable waiting for the Porsche haters to come out of the woodwork then have to listen to all you bhing about a car you have no intention of buying anyway. I'm a Porsche fan - but I also love GTRs, Ferraris, TVRs, Lotus, BMW and everything in between. I'm a fan of anything that does something superbly. Hence, I love the 911.

You do realise that this is a car forum? What would be boring would be everyone saying how wonderful it is.
I sometimes think that's what some people on here want, especially (but not uniquely) fans of certain German car brands. That's what single marque forums are for - blind praise of cars and a complete denial of their faults. Personally, I prefer a forum where people are critical of cars, even if I often don't agree with them.
The sunroof looks exactly like the tilt and slide glass one on the new Fiat 500. Pic here: http://images.compucars.co.uk/102958/large/fiat-50...
Not sure how stable it would be at autobahn speeds. Might have a speed restriction if open (like the 'brolly' on that fancy Boxter).

I love how people criticise Porsche for building cars that all look the same but no one seems to mention Aston Martin who haven't changed their basic design for a looooooong time!
To be fair, firstly people do complain about Aston and secondly that design is nowhere near as old as the 911 one. If Im honest, I am no Porsche fan, however what I do like is fast, balanced RWD cars with a charismatic engine mated to a manual gearbox. Relaiability, 2+2 and a boot is a bonus.
My perfect car would be a TVR Cerbera, with reliability and a chassis that does not rot. Maybe there are a couple out there that match this criteria!
Next best thing, one day, might just be one of these (or an Evora S).
I wish Porsche all the best, as they are one of the few marques that still tick all the boxes for driving enthusiasts.

Why would Porsche radically change a very successful product? IMO it does look bit different to the 997, the windows for example look sleeker, and the back end seems to be developing a lip above the rear lights.
Every recent (ish) departure Porsche has made gets panned (Cayenne, Panamera) and the Cayman hasn't sold that well.
If they axed the 911 shape in favour of something else, I'm sure that wouldn't go down well!
If you don't want/like the 911, buy something else. Simples.
I can't believe I'm having to defend one of the major success stories in sports car history on a car enthusiasts website!!!

OK. I admit it before you guess it anyway. I've got a 911. It's a 996 'cos that's a really cheap way to get a wonderful driver's car that you really can use every day and for every purpose. I've just come back from 6000 miles of camping - no kidding, with ALL the kit - to the home of the Targa Florio and back. St. Tropez to Wiltshire (940 miles) in just 13 hours of driving. So: sportscar, GT, grand tourer and even camper. And those italian Ferrari lovers were all over it as well. Kids, and even Mums, can identify a 911. Why would a near 50 year success story be messed with? The 928 was supposed to end the 911. Interestingly, the new model has a lot of 928 from the rear. And 996 from the front! I knew the unloved 996 would prove to be ahead of it's time. When the 997 went all retro, it became even more clear the later models would be more 996-like. Evolution, not revolution. The problem with clean-sheet designs is that the designers make mistakes they already solved with earlier models. That's stupid.

Jesus, let's not dress the old Tipo up. No offence to owner or whomever, but SOTW? POSOTW more like!
Back on topic...I think they should have gone a bit more radical. Maybe they will reserve the more aggressive look for the GT3's.Edited by MrDarkBlack on Tuesday 9th August 01:01
