What happens when they get to 999? smile
1011? 1911? or just 911 again?
Peugeot had this problem.
They always had a "0" in the middle: 201 203 204 205 304 305 306 404 405 406 and so on.
It was a nostalgic reminder of the hole in the front grille of the older models for placing the starting crank.
Recently they have made a 2003 I think, and even a few others, with 4 cyphers.

Porsche had made the 904 GTS... and had to rename it 914 GTS because of Peugeot's number system.

But somehow, with all Porsche looking similar,
it would seem very odd to see an unusual numbering!

This still looks like a 997 facelift. If all the codes are correctly placed for current production:

987 - Boxster & Coxster (chassis 996: Engine 9A1)
970 - Panamera (chassis 970: Engine E2/3; EA835)
E2 - Cayenne (chassis E2: Engine E2/3; EA835)
997 - 911 (chassis 997; Engine 9A1)
991 - 911 (9/2011) Chassis 991; Engine 9A1)

Saw a red one at the traffic lights in Ludwigsburg yesterday (wasn't fast enough with the iPhone, but will be on the look out today).
really looks ugly.. rear lights are very narrow and the sunroof looks stupid opened (a bit like the whole roof resting above the rear window)..
The lower rear lamps were still cover with tape, as were the side repeaters and front lower lamps(day LED driving lights); Front lamps are obviously R8 LED type, as are the rear lamps.
The interior looked different, more plastic Aluminium, eliptical..

This is still a 997 just a facelift.. isn't the next generation a 991.. If all the codes are correctly placed for current production:
confused Everything I've read about all the spy shots of this car have said that it's the 991? Now I'm thoroughly confused.

Writing too confused (bloody numbers) and too much again.. I'll delete that out..

This 991 still uses the old 3.8l 9A1 Engine (which wont be replaced until 2017 apparently) from the last of the 996, just with the downsized 3.6l 523HP VTCI version instead of the old 3.8l VTCI & a start-stop version..

Apparently the new Boxster (2012) will use the 9X1 platform from this 991, and come with a non-boxer 4cyl 2.0l turbo(from the Audi TT)... according to rumours, anyone else heard this?
