Might just be the recording but, even for a 911, it sounded terrible when pulling through the forecourt.
That was what I was thinking. To me a fast car should simply purr. That sounds like an old VW Beetle with a sore throat. Hopefully, better in the metal.

It seems that metallic brown is a bit of a fashion colour in Germany and Austra at the moment. Popular colour for new smaller BMWs. (Sorry, not my taste though).

I am sure that despite all this, it will be a great car to drive quickly.

Being a designer on the 911 team must be the worst job in car design. How can you show even the slightest bit of originality in your work? I hope they get paid well; they sure as hell need too.

On the flip side, as a well documented hater of the modern 911 why do I then lust after a new 911 GT3 RS 4.0 boxedin Go figure.....

wow i see what clarkson's on about now, when are Porsche actually gonna design a proper new 911???
But what for? They have a very successful recipe in not designing a new car.

And let’s not forget that this is why the 911 is the most profitable car in the world and has been for a long time. Never having to design a new car means their development costs are tiny compared to most

Unfortunately life doesn't work that way. I know a lot of teachers, and nurses as well as people working in the private sector that work bloody hard, but will never be able to afford a new (or nearly new) Porsche.

Just looking at it when it rolled up next to the 1 series I'm amazed how much bigger, the once nimble/svelte sports car is than the BMW. Its a 997 on heavy steroids. And the view from the rear is alarmingly like the panamania.

These are not for enthusiasts anymore. Please let new makers march in with better ideas. J

The 911 has been a big GT type car for a long time. They have the Cayman as a small (although even that isn't particularly small) sports car.

The 911 just gets more bloated and more powerful. A few more iterations and it'll be the same size as the Panamera!

The lithe, snap happy 911's of old are long, long gone.

"The 911 has been a big GT type car for a long time."

And you know its just gotten a whole bunch wider and longer than it was just now.

I think other makers are beginning to get the idea of making a usable (not so ugly) rightly proportioned sports car thats small, powerful, fun to drive, light-weight and crash worthy. Like here...

And it wouldn't take that much to add a few more luxuries to this new Ginetta to make it more that habitable for the average enthusiast. j

WOW thanks kbf1981, work hard and earn more - it really is that easy isn't it?!?! Why didn't I work that out ages ago... furious

Its goiod to see that they have made the front more aggresive. I always liked the front of the 996S and this new one has the intakes similar to that

...and in that final still-shot the front-end looks a bit too much like the "new" beetle too.

It also makes sense it being bigger in order to make space for a bigger mid-engine Boxster/Cayman replacement next year, which in itself will make space for the possibly forthcoming little roadster in a couple of years.

It's easy to systematically criticise Porsche for their very conservative styling but I don't know many keen performance car drivers that have driven and/or owned a modern Porsche and found it anything but brilliant to drive compared to anything else available. They actually are very very good if you ignore the image/jealousy thing that many systematically express. It's almost a reverse snobbery thing where many Porsche owners could not care less about what others think of them and don't buy a car for what the image it projects, yet the ones who can't afford them seem to be obsessed with that image thing.

That engine lid doesn't look right. Is this really how the new car is going to be?

Looks nice. But what this up with this current obsession with brownish colours? Looks completely awful on any car imo.
