I did post earlier that it's 1,500 at 75mph. Peak torque of 460lb ft from 1,500-2,500rpm in the current 535d.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ZF_8HP_transmission

Looking at where else it is used, it is a gearbox designed to obtain optimum economy from larger capacity, torque-heavy engines in large cars.

Loads of cars have high theoretical top speeds, but ultimately their power output and drag coefficient limits what that will actually be. All it means is that cars with this transmission will tend to hit their real top speeds (as opposed to the limited ones) in sixth gear (which offers 1:1 drive ratio) with seventh and eighth merely dropping the rpm at that speed.

Otherwise a 760Li could hit 262.5mph at it's peak power output of 5,250rpm. Peak torque of 550lb ft on that runs from 1,500-5,000rpm, so "locomotive" is a fairly apt description of the power delivery. 535d makes peak power at 4,400rpm so it's theoretical top speed by gearing comes out at 220mph. By the same logic my 750i with its ancient long striding four cogger does 184mph as it gives 35mph/1,000rpm in top. In reality and unlimited, it'd probably top out about 160-165ish.

The other engines the gearbox is appended to also all seem to hit peak torque from 1,500-1,750rpm up to 4,500 for the petrol options and 1,500-2,500 and 1,750-3,000 for the diesel ones - so there's no need to supply gearboxes with different internal ratios whether it's going onto a petrol or diesel engine.

That's only possible now the whole range of engines (in the Seven Series at least - apart from the Asian market 730i) is turbocharged and that's almost universally the case in Five Series too (barring the NA 528i).
Right so its 50mph/1000rpm.

So if owner of the new 535d with the 8 speed auto get the same as they did with the LCI E60 535d then they have been eating pork (porkie pies) or they are still learning how to drive it to its best abilities. Or they like the loud pedal a lot in which case if they drove a petrol like that then it would be lol mpg.

New 535d is low 50's mpg COMBINED.....
Old 535d LCI E60 was 38-40
Original 535d pre LCI E60 was 32-34mpg combined.

That really is proper progress + each iteration is quicker....

OT, but I would take howmanyleft.com's "info" cautiously. The figure of 11 in the case of your 550 might be right, but a lot of the stats on there seem to be inaccurate.
according to that site, there are only 40 X5 50is in the country. I'm surprised it's that many!

i wouldn't go by the water temp gauge, but going from what i've seen with derv engines the oil temp usually takes longer to warm up as they waste less heat in the combustion process. Even in winter ive seen the gauges drop when sitting still.

OK back to school now mate, off you go - we're all getting a little tired of your childish arguing.

And yet your still taking the time out to engage me in argument? I'm 21, I'm supposed to be a juvenile delinquent whats your excuse for acting like a child?

Agreed, I get around 38/39mpg (75% A-road/10% M-way) which I'm really pleased about considering the official combined figure is 35. I dont use any 'official' hypermiling techniques apart from looking ahead.

At 21, I thought one was supposed to both be and behave like an adult?

54bhp biggrin

I used to drive one of those when I first passed the driving test biggrin

Was quite amusing really. The 2.9V6 with nearly 3 times the power and awd felt somewhat faster!

That's progress downsized from 2.3 to 1.2 delivering the same power.

Thing is that sierra 2.3 D was the type of diesel which you could leave sat at maximum engine speed every day tank after tank and it wouldn't break. Utterly hard core unit for reliability.
I'll not try that in my car as it wouldn't last anywhere near as long.

2.3D was from the Transit iirc, and the Sierra had it from A reg, so 82 ish?

So the engine must have been a mid 70's design. 54bhp for a 2.3d without a turbo was probably quite good.

Do you mean you're?

And I know lots of ~21 year olds being only 28 myself. None of them act like argumentative prats who can't see the wood for the trees.

And I'm the son of 2 Indian immigrants (many years ago) who came to the country with nothing. Far from wealthy middle class.

I'm from Leicester. Not London.

Are you seriously this thick, or are you a troll?

Zwoelf is from the south east, and it was to his comment i was replying, which is why i highlighted his comment in my reply and didnt address the post to you. But out slow-mo!

Oh no a garage that includes a Porsche and BMW and has included Mercedes, BMWs, VWs and Porsches is the garage of a salt of the earth working class man.
Unless of course your a cocaine dealer?

Why are you carrying on with this? Your blood pressure must be through the roof!

I'm not wealthy, middle class or from London, so guess that means I'm "or something". Perhaps 21 now isn't what it was a decade ago.

My mistake its just everybody ive ever met from the south east claims they're from London even if they actually lived in Surry or northamptonshire.
It depends entirely who you know i suppose. Not many people i know changed from what they were like in school. Yeah some have kids now but theyre still the same as they used to be. But then its a no hope/no oppertunity area.

Again, I think you must mean "you're a cocaine dealer".

I am by no means middle class. I come from a very working class background, and I've done OK for myself, not fantastically well, and have spent a lot of money on cars as it's my passion.

That doesn't make me middle class. Or a coke dealer.

But you keep thinking like that in order to justify your past, present, and future failures.. it will make you feel better.

My blood pressure is fine thanks smile

I am by no means getting annoyed or angry about this, I see it as a wet behind the ears kid proving himself to be rather silly.

I am quite argumentative by nature, especially when I see such an easy target wink

Ahh of course that expalins your convincing and measured responses.

Wet behind the ears? Hmmmmmmmmm.

(Maybe write to your-move requesting they change their name then if it bothers you that much)

Yes, and "you're" is a contraction of "you are". As would normally be used in such a sentence as:
