Maybe I should have worded it differently, I've had no direct experience of any of my colleagues even considering it, of course I've seen news reports but it is far from widespread.
Even I knew thats what you meant.

If the dealerships are doing this sort of thing (not saying it's widespread), but just have to sort out a valet and perhaps a service when they're caught, is that enough of an incentive to make sure their staff don't do it again?

Shocking and I do get the impression it's pretty widespread - be it taking cars for a weekend or, as was just previously posted, using a customer car to go and pick up lunch!

If I found my car had been used this way I'd be furious.

The outcome will be some bullst story about making sure the car would start after being hot and to take the car in for a valet and if she really pushes it maybe an oil change thrown in if she is very lucky!

Interested to hear the response...
I would also love to hear how they would deal with it if you proved it had been at the golf course.

Yes, Allerton in Liverpool, but she actually lives almost 40 miles east of Allerton, just outside Manchester so it really was quite a drive out for the happy golfing party!

This sort of thing happens a lot abroad. In a past life I used to work for GM in Customer Care and the best story I had to deal with was of a customer getting in big trouble with his wife as his car was photographed by the police on a Saturday night picking up a prostitute (that's what they do in Italy, photo-name and shame-big fine).

It turns out it was the dealer's son out joyriding in a customer's astra turbo.

Local guy got horrible service from our local Audi dealer. His new A5 TFSI was burning oil like an old Austin Maxi, so it went in on several occasions with no resolution. He then saw the car doing laps of the city in the sort of manner you wouldn't drive your own car. Car was returned still not fixed, covered in tar spots. Car was returned and paint was ruined by a monkey with a buffer. Legal action was taken.

Yes, very rare.

You've heard of it happening before, how many issue free services have you not heard about?

In 8-9 years in the trade I've never known anyone take one out for a jolly without the customer's consent.
Really, Mark?

There must be a reason behind the general opinion that car salesmen are a bit 'dodgy'. No smoke without fire, etc smile

Happened to me with the wife's r32. We had it from new, her pride and joy that was a weekend and odd day out toy. Taken to a service at a Maidstone main dealer. Didnt tell then we logged the miles. Got it back it had done 20 miles and the fuel average had dropped from 22 to 15.

First rang another dealership and checked what they did on similar service. Then rang the Maidstone one. They denied the test drive. Then admitted it may go on a short one. Then when told it was a few miles claimed a quality checker has taken it. Then described his route. Which was about half the distance travelled.

They then got obstructive and only offered a fill up of fuel. Despite having twoc'd my car and lied about it.

It's pretty common in my view if you take a quick car in that some oik from there will take it for a drive.

It's border line criminal behaviour in my view.

I've heard of at least 3-4 friends having similar at varying dealers.

I'd be asking for a new car for a couple of reasons.

Firstly, it shouldn't be failing to start and they've had a couple of stabs at fixing it.

Secondly, she ordered a new car. If she wanted someone else to be pottering around at the weekend then she'd have saved money by buying used.

This happens an aweful lot

Update...

It was the Service Manager that had taken it home to use for the weekend! And yes, he had indeed been golfing in it! redface

He grovelled extensively on the phone this morning.

They are collecting the car off her, giving herva courtesy car and then they will give the car a full valet to remove any trace of the 18 hole course, plus replace the backs of the driver/passenger seats that have been scuffed by shoes from people in the rear seats.
