I can't see anyone claiming that the new M5 will cost £100,000...
The frikkin' article said:
Best of all, with a sticker price of £49,850 it's approximately half the cost of the new F10...and that's before the new model has been formally released.
Surely very few people would just turn-up and pay the full-whack? I'd expect that to go for more like £45,000 - maybe less. Then take into account that this is a Limited Edition and I think that 'approximately' half the price of a fully-spec'd new M5 isn't exactly apochryphal.
Whatever.
Can you see someone claiming that the new M5 will cost £100K now?
Nope...

These are definitely one of the cars I'll buy myself when I can afford them. smile Incredible. In my opinion very beautiful as well, although I can see why they are so 'marmite' smile

I DID NOT KNOW YOU NEEDED TO HAVE CORRECT SPELLING, AND USE OF PROPER ENGLISH ON HERE. NOW I KNOW I WILL DO MY BEST AS IM NOT THAT EDUCATED ..... OMG LOL PMSL WTF TTFN

IVE SEEN WORSE ON HERE lol

Back to car's, turbo's are actually helping manufacturer's to still create fast car's

as the Euro 5 emmissions are so strict.

Also turbochargers are better than those of 25 years ago,

We will look back in 10 years time and thank turbochargers for keeping car's

with power, because in 10 years i reackon an m5 will be a 2.0 turbo lol.

Money no object, I'd wait for the new one. Simply because I've never liked the E60. Looks way too bland for a BMW, and I'm happy it's gone; replaced by the best looking 5er since the E34!

Also, from an engine noise POV, never really been a fan of V10s, so I'm happy the V8 is back! Even if it's got a couple of turbos.

= )

There are some miserable bds on here, the beauty of the M5 range across the years is that each one offers a different package, whilst still being a great all round car. Good story, not everyone is a multi-millionaire able to drop 90k+ on a new car!

Are there any major issues with the V10 unit in the previous generation M5/6 or has it proved to be reliable? It's been around a while now and I haven't heard any horror stories about it. I quite fancy an M6 with a suitably loud exhaust next! biggrin

there are a few horror stories, but they are that...a few. i think i'm right in saying (though happy to be shown otherwise) that just about all ///M engines have been pretty reliable units if maintained properly; especially considering the life they lead. the gearboxes are the weaker links than the engines though....

No issues that I am aware of. On full chat the stock exhaust sounds pretty good to me!

Can highly recommend an M6 driving

The only thing that isnt perfect about this (and the M6 which I have) is the old tech gearbox, but when the V10 is on song, nothing else matters.

Enjoying the car now, since in a few years they'll be outlawed by the greenies.

Got a fuel card against the M6 now too. So a minimum of 60% reduction in fuel. driving

love to have a fuel card like yours. 60% off fuel amazing

No thanks

Not without another 20 grand for if it goes wrong
have you never heard of warranty, and extended warranty for when its over 3 years? wink

this is 1 year old so if something goes bang then it gets sorted free. so why would you need 20k??? and what on earth did you have in mind that you are so sure that it'd go that would cost 20k!? i recall you saying that all diesels spend more time in the dealers too!?

do you always talk about of your arse? hehe
No just I buy cars I plan to keep until they are dead

Not to own for a short while and shift onwards to someone else

For this reason i wouldn't buy something that is overly complicated.

so you'd never buy with you heart, or what you actually want if the car is a little complicated? just something that always "makes sense"? how boring! each to their own i guess.

If it is overly complicated i don't want or like it

complicated does not mean exciting or fun.

My nieghbours Q7 needs a new door handle because the electronics in the doorhandle has gone tits-up

What posible contribution to the driving experience does a smart door handle offer?

Its just something to go wrong

I'm far more towards the old Lotus idea of less is more.

i'm not saying complicated is necessarily fun, but i'm saying some fun cars are complicated.

As a Merc man through and through, I have to say that the E60 M5 has so much more appeal to me than any AMG Merc. A friend's dad bought one recently and took me out for a quick blast - all I can say is what an engine. The howl was one of those that sounds like it belongs more in a Formula 1 car than in a big BMW saloon. The gearbox certainly hammers through the ratios too (I presume the shift aggression was turned up to full) and the thing left me feeling after just a short passenger ride that I'd been in a car which had more character than most German cars can muster. It turns out that the thing has since been ruinously expensive to run, but its difficult to care when a car sounds like that.

Had my E60 M5 almost a year now and its been great. Only fault has been DAB reception being ste. Oh and servotronic (power steering) failure last night whilst cornering at speed which was a bit of a surprise.

Looks of the F10 are growing on me though.

I would love to have a E60 M5 over the E39. My worry is the life of the auto-clutch and the ancillaries. At least on the E39 the clutch/gearbox is same as the 540i so it is not too bad. The ancillaries and engine/gearbox sensors can be expensive but whether you need it or not is down to luck.

Ideally I am hoping to find a well-cared for car which has not done a LC launch at all. (Personally with the E39 I make sure the clutch is fully engaged in first under 1500 rpm before I nail the throttle - slow I know but the car is plenty fast enough once rolling...)

What is the cost of clutch replacement on the E60 M5? Are there any sensors which are weak-points? Is there any way to tell if the car has done a launch-control start?

Otherwise is the engine and the gearbox itself reliable if well maintained? (i.e. gearbox and diff oil change every 20k or so)

Not sure about that. I've not had an M5, but I have owned a lesser E39, and the clutch has a valve on the release which stops it dropping too abruptly on all but the M5. I'm pretty sure this can be worked around if it's a problem.

I recall this because the USA got a manual E60 M5 after much complaining, but when they got it, BMW had fitted it with a similar "clutch-dropping safegard", which lots of people hated.
