I see the comparison as odd, the 911RS is generally more track focused with the bonus of being able to drive it on the road. The Cayman R is more of a road car & good for the odd track day. Well, I'm using a 7.2 GT3 as a daily drive which I find not at all compromised compared to the vanilla C2S I had before. But its massively more exciting to drive on regular road and a weapon on track. Still don't get the Cayman R... Personally i'd take the GT3 & be happy to use it as a DD, yet i think i'd take the Cayman R over the C2S. Always had a soft spot for the Cayman in the same way i do for its more obvious competition, the Evora.

I don't care if it has a sex magnet as an optional extra...
Porsche make great cars to drive but my god- they have no imagination. Infact, the most imagination I have seen out of Porsche recently is blue alloys... and they just look generally shyte.

Porsche should be ashamed in the fact that the produced such a beautiful car, and produce cars now that are stlyed by accountants. 911 speedster, classic are just some that come to mind.

If the biggest problem with the car is that it says "R", this is very good deal Of course with more power you get better track car but this it MR-layout and appeals to different crowd than followers of "RR religion".

The seats on the R are absolutely fantastic. I'm only a slim chap but they hug beautifully and even though the only adjustment is back and forth the driving position is sublime.

Yes, the R may look a bit half-hearted but it seems to come to life on the track.
The laptimes posted by reliable german magazines which have this car at stock beating the Aston V12 Vantage, Merc SLS and 911 GTS tell their own story.....
One day we will find out what suspension and chassis tweaks this car has which, make it so much quicker on track than the standard "S".

Schnellmann said: I've never got to grips with the idea that it (the Cayman) is more expensive than the Boxster. I would have bought a metal roofed Boxster in '02 when I bought mine, if there had been one available, so when they brought out the Cayman for the '06 model year I was intrigued. When I saw that they priced it above the Boxster I was astonished but felt that the second hand market would be 'a great leveller' and before too long 3yr old Caymans would trade for less than the equivalent Boxsters... When this didn't happen, I convinced myself that it must be the relative scarcity/novelty value of the Cayman that supported Porsche's 'arbitrary' premium pricing... [My view is that they realised that those pesky Boxsters which did such a fine job of 'saving' the company in the late 90's were now simply 'too cheap' but they couldn't work out a way to move the price point up market without a peasants' revolt /customer backlash so they conceived the Cayman to milk the sub-911 price point]. People percieved that the Cayman was worth the premium price tag that Porsche endowed it with. These people were probably right, for a period of time at least. They could after all look down on Boxster owners in the food chain and that in itself must be worth something, to some people! [I should have run up some "I didn't buy the entry level Porsche, Yeah!" T-Shirts!] We are now 6 years into Cayman production and according to my local marketplace (autoscout24.ch) there are more Cayman for sale (aged 5 years or younger) than similarly aged Boxsters so scarcity is not a particular issue. It's hard to see through all the different permutations of specification etc. but is it finally fair to say that the 8-10% price premium of the Cayman has all but disappeared when they get to 5 years old, and possibly substantially gone by 3 years? That would appear to be the case over here but other markets may be different.

If you asked if I wanted a play in a stripped out track car, I'd be delighted.
If you asked me if I wanted to live day-to-day with a car with no air con and ropes to open the doors, I'd tell you to get knotted. If I owned such a car, I'd want to use it for long distance touring and those little comforts make it a nicer place to be. I'm with the article on this conclusion.

Had a quick check myself...and you are right that it is difficult to make a comparison because the price difference between similar Boxsters/Caymans is difficult to fathom so trying to make one between Boxsters and Caymans is even harder. But a cursory glance doesn't seem to show a trend. I wonder whether the fact that there are more Caymans on the market is because there were more Caymans sold than Boxsters....or that they are less popular and more difficult to shift on the second hand market. Does anyone know the relative sales volumes for Boxsters/Caymans?

Surely they could have called it by a different name and sold it. using the R just turns what is a great road car once you out he aircon and nav back in, at a great price with the great bucket seats and lovely racing touches they've put, into a flop of a track car. Like using the rs on the 987 gen1. Marketing department needs to rethink this strategy.

It IS the best looking car Porsche produce. Whether this version is worthy of the "R" badge is a moot point. It wouldn't appeal to me, if I had the brass I'd be looking for a used Cayman. If you start comparing ANY new car with a similarly priced but better specced used car then no-one should ever buy a new car. A new BMW 3 series, why for the same money you can have a five year old M3 (made up without checking values) but you see the point. The comparison is fatuous.

So Porsche are really saying that the Cayman R is the car they would build if they had to start from scratch, with no compromises, and represents the "perfect car", not the 911. ...at least that is what was said about the 904GTS The Cayman packaging is superb. Just wish it had 50-100 more ponies.

Also funny too if the paintwork on these cars of bright colours and graphics were applied to other fast models of mainstream cars most of the sheep on PH shouts chav. Did it not say the car had an extra 10 bhp and different suspension? J4CKO said: So Porsche charge you extra for a lighter version and then you can opt for a Stereo and Aircon that puts the weight back that you were charged extra to remove and then they probably charge you for those options ?
If that is the case then it is marketing Coup of the decade.
Funny how people get excited about a red nylon strap to open the door on a Porsche yet if it appeared on a Korean supermini it would be derided.

So I guess F1 or rally cars look naff then too as they have stuff "written" on them too. 0aaaaaaaaaaaaaaa said: I'm not a real fan of the looks of the Cayman, but this looks even worse. How many 'bits' do you want stuck to a car? It looks like it's been down to Halfords, cars with stuff written on them look naff!
