It's still the marketing departments spec'ing what the car should be rather than the engineers, isn't it?
If it was made into the best car it could be then it would be (arguably) better then the 911 GT3, which simply won't be allowed by the marketing men. I'm thinking, smaller, lighter, better weight distribution etc etc.
While that thinking exists, I can't see how the Cayman will really be what it could be and this will likely be the best we'll get, R moniker or not.

If you start comparing ANY new car with a similarly priced but better specced used car then no-one should ever buy a new car. A new BMW 3 series, why for the same money you can have a five year old M3 (made up without checking values) but you see the point. The comparison is fatuous. I completely agree and have laboured this point quite a few times, it's a pointless comparison...what manufacturer is going to price it's cars based on used values??? The value to you is subjective, it can only be compared against it's peers in the market place..the 1M is 11k cheaper for example.

Funny how people get excited about a red nylon strap to open the door on a Porsche yet if it appeared on a Korean supermini it would be derided. Excellent points! ...and genius move for Porsche to close the price gap between Cayman and 911, without making the Cayman too quick to damage 911 sales AND improve profit margin. I'm still keen to see if anyone can get a GT3 engine in a Cayman S....

I'm still keen to see if anyone can get a GT3 engine in a Cayman S.... I think Alzen Motorsport did just this when they ran their Cayman in the VLN a couple years back?

SS7 Sorry, not sure where I was lambasting - perhaps you could point it out for me SS7 as clearly the tone conveyed was not what was intended. Never-the-less, my point remains, that the Cayman will never be what it could be as it cannot be seen to be better than the 911 as this is deemed the flagship of the company.

Possibly more because it is the same type of car. GM used to keep the Camaro and Corvette separated by a power division that was more imagined than real but as Corvette sales fade, in comes a 550hp Camaro putting out more hp than a Z06 (albeit I accept to compete with the higher stakes Ford GT500). In a wholly different vein, the Focus took over from the Sierra/Mondeo as their sales fell so I imagine it is as much to do with attaining the most frm what sells best until the market dictates otherwise.

As others have said comparing new to 2nd hand is a bit pointless really.
50 more ponies and I might of jumped ship from the S but this just isn't a big enough step to justify the move.

Usually companies will fail in an epic way when there is more worrying about how new model affects sales of older one from same company. There are many examples from British car industry to Nokia where most of the talks with new Maemo(cayman) operating system were how it affects sales of the Symbian(911). There currently is not enough competition in mid price MR sports car segment.
