I have had this problem with my Range Rover too, so its definately not an isolated issue! I actually ran out of petrol on a dual carrageway which was rather embarrassing! I'd been doing a long motorway journey and averaging around 22mpg (thats good for this beast!), gauge showed just less than a quater of a tank left and trip comp said I had 70 miles range left. Started going up a long incline and suddenly lost power (I'm assuming fuel pump is at front of the tank!), luckily some friendly plod gave me a lift to a petrol station with a jerry can. So these days I never drive with less than quarter of a tank.

My 350Z did this too and it annoyed me a little but to be fair to it I don't find the 3 series I've got much better. I think the best solution is to hoon it all the time, it keeps the fuel gauge consistent!

I used to have an BMW E39 530d that would run out of fuel while the gauge still showed anything from a half-quarter tank. I would be doing 69.5mph in the outside lane and the engine would just die and the steering got extremely heavy. Garage said it was something to do with the 5 series having two tanks and a pump between them, but anyway it took three attempts to get fixed.

My 04 Audi A4 Avant does the same thing and it drives me to distraction.

it's favourite trick though is to hover around the 200 mile range for days on end (I've learned from experience that I get about 350 from a full tank) then crash to around 40 over the space of a few miles.

like the Infinity the gauge follows the range metre too so the only time I've ever seen it saying it actually has a full tank is when I've filled up after a long motorway cruise.

Drives me potty.

Clearly the only solution smile

Does it have an option to show how many litres left, that might help?

Would that it did. Haven't thoroughly investigated this, but I don't think so... will have a look tonight and report back...

I had a Renault Clio hire car that I had to return 1/2 full - same as I took it - put 5 Euros in - nothing, put another 5 in - nothing - 10 Euros - nothing. Drove it back to the sirport and it had 3/4 of a tank. Do these gauges not work on a simple float system anymore?

I may be wrong but it seemed to alter the needle based on consumption.

Riggers, do you reset the trip computer when you fill up or otherwise regularly?

I'll double-check on mine later but I think it's a sort of cumulative total so the longer you leave it, the less it fluctuates.

Also, you can get different readings on the displays (the one between the tacho and speedo & on the central screen display) which is a bit confusing too!

Btw, had a tyre blow-out at 8am today and the car had to go back to Infiniti Reading for a new one 'cos the fronts are an unusual size (apparently) and nobody else had it in stock. Car now due back to me 7.30pm ish! Be warned! Wish they still gave you spare wheels...

There really ought to be 2 separate systems: the gauge that gives you a measure of volume of fuel left and a readout that tells you what you can do with it.

That seems to be the case with the earlier generation of trip computers but "progress" seems to have interfered with logic in this instance.

I rarely let mine get below quarter tank................. and I ignore the "You're driving like an idiot" range meter!

Had the same issue with both a G35X sedan and now a G37 sedan. Both had schizophrenic fuel gauges which is a shame on a car that is really such an excellent combination of performance and value.
