Where's GP when you need him?

it does seem odd that the seller doesnt just change the clutch and charge £2000 for it. It looks clean enough and the mileage isnt a worry.

As to why are these so much less than E30 M3's??

Because people arent scared of running E30 M3's.
People are st scared of running E34 M5's.

you'd have to be a complete Muppet not to have a good time AND make money on it.

for example (yes I know it is an Audi and PH hates them tongue out )
the run-down on my £600 Audi A8 4.2

I paid £600 for the car

I got back
£1600 for the complete Engine/gearbox/transfer-box
£400 wheels (with four new tires)
£200 bodyshell (the scrap metal yard collected it)
£80 for the Exhaust with CATs
£50 headlights
£50 rearlights
£80 ABS ECU
£90 gearbox ECU
£100 Main ECU
£100 clocks
£300 complete black leather interior with doorcards
£50 complete front grill set

Much as I enjoyed the quirkiness of recent weeks (Vauxhall, Rover 213 etc) this is in a different league... both in terms of risk (i.e. wallet!) and reward (fun, long term profit etc).

A guy I worked for when I was 17 had the same model M5 (as well as an LS400 and a v8 Range Rover!) and it was the dogs bits!

How much does classic insurance cost for an M5 on (say) 3k miles per year?

Is it an engine out job for the clutch or drop the gear box? Maybe the owner just doesn't have the time.

Awesome - but looking at the list of replaced parts, there's a lot of coolant system stuff being done. Now, it could be just decent preventative maintenance or it could be a case of chasing a still unresolved overheating fault?

I remember a friend buying one of those for ~£3k a few years ago. Apart from:

Duff shocks
Broken speedo
bent suspension arm
2 oil leaks on the engine
a random sensor I forget which

and Birds asking for £6k to fix it all.

It was a great buy!...ummm

I need this. Think I can palm the girlfriend off with enough crappy shoes by end of the day for her to let me get it?

I need a good excuse though so will have to get thinking sharpish!

SOMEONE BUY THIS SHED BEFORE I DO !!!!!

This is a TOTAL BARGAIN.

If the engine/gearbox are good, them alone will sell for £1500.

The dials are worth money, as is the interior, thorowing star wheels, body panels, etc.

Who knows, it might not even be that bad - and you could get the clutch fixed and smoke around in it?

BEST SHED OF THE WEEK

EVER

(I don't think another shed could EVER top this!!!).

Look guys, buy it, and forget about big repair bills. DO IT YOURSELF. As long as the body is sound, all the rest is just a nut and bolt job. It isn't rocket science to strip/repair as it needs doing, and bits aren't expensive either, except for maybe the dampers which on the later M5's is costly to replace, but standard stuff fits ok and is just as good. If I had the space, it would be up on axle stands, stripped, body off to the body shop for a respray, suspension and braking system renovation, engine strip and re-build, new interior, and viola !, a 'NEW' car for about £10,000.

If someone is competent enough with the spanners to sort the clutch themselves; buy this please.

What a bargain.

Easily get your grand's worth out of it before it breaks. Then probably make your money back in parts.

I concur; best shed ever!

I had one of these from 1999-2002 as my own car i bought it with 189000 on it, a one owner car that had been loved. i sold it with 220000 plus on it,it had a full BMW history and it was in perfect conditon throughout.
But what an amazing car built like a bank vault, they were all hand built in those days by the M division,it was probably the most affordable to keep on the road bar the first 3.8 models, after that they got complicated suspension (nurbugring it was called and prone to problems)
It had a beautifully cammy delivery, not much down low but at 4500 rpm it would take off, used to break traction in the wet in 2nd on certain roads at 4500 as it came on song.
Just before i sold it i had it flat out at an indicated 165 and still pulling,it was builit proof.
Had one of my best ever high speed drives, from north of Rotterdam to Calais one warm summers evening in an hour and three quarters, averaged 200 kph (124mph) the whole way, traffic was low and on superb motorways, it wasnt a serious crime then.
Great Memories of probably the best car i have ever owned, it wasnt the fastest or most expensive car ive owned but What a car,
Beautifully built. very subtle in dark grey with buffallo black leather no bootlid spoiler and the optional wider rear wheels.
BTW for whoever buys the SOTW (if i dont !) i have an original set of 4, Dog-leg spoke alloys with the optional wider Rear rims (not the earlier 1990 fan type spoke) with tyres. i had these as a spare set never used them.

is the seller a member here??

Someone make him an offer before he see’s this thread!

if he takes a look through this at some point he may come across all the recommendations for breaking it for parts and getting 3times his asking price that way!

But it would depend on him having time to break it as required.

Are those wheels the ones designed for the M5-specific 'turbine' covers (which are not there) and painted black?

I think if you have the time and space it makes sense to break after use.

Most people don't have either so it's just not worth the hassle.
