and here is the info for the clutch change.

I am sure if you slipped the owner an extra few hundred he would do it for you.

Glad to say I had one of these for a while, very charismatic cars and they handle much better than they should

I love these things but my gut feeling is that you're probably right. Whilst there is a slim chance that this is an utter bargain, it seems very likely from the ad that the seller knows what it is and has priced on condition.

If it's a very tired example then swanning around in it as is might totally spoil the handling and the whole M5 experience. I'd say it looks like a cheap buy for somebody after a project but not convinced that it would make a good car as is. If I'm wrong, somebody will get an utter bargain.

Liking this one a lot! Glad it's not closer really, knowing my luck it would turn into a right nightmare if I bought it. Best SOTW for a while

Look at the price of old Escorts as a case in point, a 2 lb tub of genuine MK1 Escort rust goes for seven to ten grand, manky old Sierra Cosworths go for silly money, Integrales are 20k plus and this is a genuine M5 for a grand.
Really good point there

I think you're overlooking the fact that this is one of a few diminishing remaining hand built classics. I'd buy it and store it if I had the room

I'm thinking it'd be fun to use the shell and drivetrain as the basis of a car for something like Britcar. Change the clutch, cage it, coilovers, (other safety stuff). bandit

At least its a bit different from every other E34 M5 I have seen recently- it doesnt have an (I havent been to) Nurburgring badge on the boot, which is nice smile
To be honest I get really bored of everyone worshiping the 'M' badge just for the sake of it, Great engine, not feeling the rest of it. Give me the Jaaaag from previous sotw any day, it had real class.

If it really just needs a clutch - why's it so cheap?

What can a clutch fitting be - £400 at most?

Are those wheels the ones designed for the M5-specific 'turbine' covers (which are not there) and painted black?
They are supposed to be black, are they not? And IIRC they fit both the original turbine covers or the throwing star covers. ETA: don't quote me on that, I can't find a definitive answer and have never tried swapping the covers over.

Hard to be certain due to the size of the pics but they do look like the proper forged rims, not cast ones, too: http://www.devinder.com/misc/tstars/tstars.html

The throwing star covers only covered the spokes so if you have black alloys, like these you would still have the black rims showing

Escort Mk1&2 - Competition Pedigree
Sierra Cosworth - Competition Pedigree
Integrale - Competition Pedigree
M5 - ?

Oh yes, you're absolutely right - too busy looking at the hub to notice the rim had been painted!
