The guy who did my flying instructor rating , which 30 years ago was the poor mans route to a Commercial Pilots Licence, was an ex Lightning driver, ex Red Arrows pilot, total p1sshead, skirt chaser, & all round great bloke. Sadly he was killed in an L39 near to (Manston / Shoreham ? ) a few years back.
I , just remembered him , when I saw this,as he owned, back in 1980, a powder blue E Type V12 cabriolet, which he used to conduct very sedately home, after our flying club "nights out ".
How indeed, times change, regretably, I much prefered how it was . . . . . .

If PH is going to offer a picture of the week, the decent thing would be to credit the photographer responsible. In this case Mr James Lipman. Great set of shots smile

Well worth a nine but the version on "Classic and Sportscar's site" is better. Flames coming out of the back of the Lightning and no driver in the E-type (gurning or otherwise).

I'd have to agree, the Jag is far from ugly, but it's not that great to look at compared to an Alfa 33 Stradale, a Lamborghini Miura, or a Ferrari 246, i'd even say the Lancia Fulvia is better looking in my opinion.

Damn it.......busted! wink

Now if the E-Type in question had been a coupe, then i'm sure that would be very near the top.......

Maybe i'm in the minority, but the Coupe just does it for me over the soft top.

Slightly off topic. I 'heard' a story that in the days when Boscome Down had resident USAF jets, a yank was doing a low pass down the runway ( F111 I think ), when a Lightning passed underneath him, was stood on it's tail, and went straight upwards out of sight !! I believe it's still the fastest climbing jet of all time, and that it's actual ceiling height is still an official secret !!

I believe those somewhat comedy exhausts were standard on the V12. To my eyes by far the best E-Type is the early Coupe with the lower roof line and faired in headlamps.

Thanks, we're very proud of it.

For those who can't be ar**d to pop over there, you can download it here.

And if you like that (or are one of those who likes to doubt the authenticity of such things or suggest it was all done on a computer after the event) you can watch the video of the photo being taken here.

The boy Lipman is a bit special. Great photographer.

Excellent picture in it's own right, none the less the apparent lack of flame in the video makes it seem like an addition.

I'm the driver of the E Type. The car is a multi concourse winning car and was on the cover of Junes Practical Classics plus was used for a 5 page buyers guide in the mag. It has also been used as the Maguires advert for polish and many other magazine features. However I mostly enjoy driving the car as can be seen in the photo with the aircraft and when I took it around the Nurburgring for Jaguar cars.
