The Escort log book is gone already; good work. smile

The kit cars are re-bodied on the original chassis so they can retain the original registration.

no---they cannot retain the original reg:

the marlin has its own chassis, as well as the burlington

common procedure in the old times, using the donor reg for such cars, but unfortunately both cars missed the amnesty period, where the V5c could have been easily corrected under "make" with the name of the kit-manufacturer

I think this has got to be one of the most blatent ones for a long time, and these cars are still being stolen and given new ID like this, imagine if you lost your Cosworth pride and joy just because this toe rag is selling an ID ebay.

Selling the plates is, presumably, not illegal. But the price would suggest that mischief could be a possibility!

eBay question said:
What exactly are you selling here?
A Land Rover number plate on a retention certificate or log book and plates?
eBay answer said:
Plates, V5 & Vin
Date of Manufacture > 1963
date of registration >1970
Body type > Light 4x4 utility
Vin No matches V5
Engine Number > Not known
Thats about it
It is SORN and does have up to date RED V5
It's quite a good one really could be what ever you want it to be.
Sounds like a ringing kit to me.

the chassis is in bits
its all legal
thanks for the heads up anyway
You need eight points to retain an identity. A complete chassis is only five. A repaired or altered chassis will require an iva and be put on a "Q" plate at best.

There is no legitimate reason for anyone to buy this.

well you can buy it, I'll give you the axles to make up some more points
If I could afford it I would to save someone else's pride and joy Land Rover from being stolen and your identity being used.

You can have the lot if you want and rebuild it. Its all here in bits, come get it before it goes to the tip.

For radically altered vehicles a points system is used.
Vehicle must score eight or more points to retain the original identity and avoid the need for an SVA test.
The following values are allocated to the major components used:

chassis or body shell (body and chassis as one unit - monocoque ie direct replacement from the manufacturer) (original or new) = 5 points

suspension = 2 points

axles = 2 points

transmission = 2 points

steering assembly = 2 points

engine = 1 point
Why not advertise the job lot? At least that way you'll attract legitimate customers and save you the expense of a trip to the tip.

So presumably if these ringing kits are bought and acted upon, the criminal would to all intents and purposes have a motor that although stolen, wouldn't come up on any data bases, wouldn't arouse suspicion, wouldn't be on police files, etc, etc, in effect they'd have conjured up a whole new 'legit' car ?

That is the essence of the problem. There are such cars running about. Hence the concern on here because very few buyers are sufficiently aware to spot the con. Hence the efforts on here to stop the nuisance. I regularly see at least a dozen kit cars a year that are clearly ringers on an old identity. All best avoided.
