marshalla said: There's a difference between retaining the original ID, and the legalities of selling an ID. It is perfectly legal to sell the ID with a chassis or a monocoque shell. Whether or not it can return to the road retaining that ID once rebuilt is an entirely different bag of bananas.

It's a grey area as Land Rover chassis do have a habit of eating themselves. Provided it's like for like it is simply a replacement part. That's why we should stick to log books and VIN plates. Happy hunting guys, keep up the good work.

I cannot think PH would knowingly allow this to continue.

Despite the we do take this type of problem seriously, but we're not as swift out of hours. I've removed it, but it can take a while to disappear. I'll keep an eye on it to make sure it goes.

Just found another 110 chassis/V5 for sale on ebay vendor states that the engine body and gearbox were removed to rebuild another Landy, so its not illegal to sell but useless to a new owner unless they want a Q plate or have to get it IVA'ed. I suppose a sensible purchaser would rebuild and just inform DVLA of the new engine no. I struggle to comprehend this can of worms, seems to be a Landy thief's dream.

This does get tricky because a heritage shell rebuilt as the original car should only require inspection, not SVA I think. I do not like this business of bits of cars being sold as identity transfers. If the advertiser honestly describes the true circumstances I doubt that any of the media, PH, Autotrader or Ebay would accept the advert Therefore is is misrepresentation at the very least. IMO it is generally criminal activity although there may be the odd idiot who does not realise the legal consequences. This is of course every reason for PH'ers to try and weed these out.

V5C belongs to the DVLA and should be submitted at time of scrapping. That vehicles identity then ceases to exist. You cannot retain the ID 'on rentention' and attempt to build a new car with it. Building a car from scratch from a new shell would fall under the SVA Amateur Build class, and would be allocated either a new reg, or a Q plate, depending on various circumstances.

Even Heritage shell kit cars need to retain more than the VIN plates to keep the identity of the original car.

Sorry for being naive, what is the issue here? I guess it is essentially claiming that one car is another hence making it easier to steal, move stolen good on?
Where does the term 'ringing' come from?

That, and the issues around unsafe vehicles escaping testing and vehicles being valued at considerably more than their true worth due to false identity. It's nice that eBay are no longer listing vehicle identity sales as prohibited items and there's now no box to fill in. They must have changed the law eh?
