I'd love an Audi R8....but £50k is still a huge wad of cash.

If it was £40k it'd look very tempting. Maybe in a few years I'll have one.

The R8 is an odd car, having driven one on road & track, i can't fault its performance, it just seems to lack something compared to the Porsche & Aston it's being compared to here. In fact i'd rather have an Audi RS5 over the R8, now if we were talking about the R8 V10, that's a different matter.

Well, I know of one man who's in a perfect position to comment. Mr Gooch?

For the record, I'd have a Gallardo over any of the above.

it would have to be a GTR for me - I'm not a badge snob and the GTR would get me the fastest and best performing of the choices, whilst still a giving me a usable everyday car (and with very reasonable running costs if one uses a specialist like Litchfield) and £10-15k cash left over!
So that would be a GTR and an R26.R then biggrin or a clio 200 cup.

Preferred R8 (manual) over 996 Turbo in terms of overall niceness - not much in it really in terms of reliability - however pads for the audi were surprisingly expensive compared to the Porsche (aftermarket) not tried a 997T though - would imagine its very nice

the choice of tyres for the R8 was better also i found

Would advise anybody NOT to buy an R-tronic car - not a nice experience im afraid, in fact absolute garbage to the point of trying to make it break so i could give it back (courtesy car)

Those who would choose a Gallardo - be prepared for some bills and chocolate drivetrain

Vantage manual was very very reliable and much more practical than an R8

Nissan rules for so many reasons though - so many very good reasons

If I had that kind of money I'd go slightly left field and bag myself 4 more cylinders.

The most beautiful car Aston ever built (IMHO) and an engine note to die for.

If I had to choose between the three though it would have to be the AM, simply because an AM would always be in my dream garage and the other two wouldn't.

Maybe buy something a little older for the same money, keep it for a couple of years & get your money back....

R8. 911 is just too samey, and not special enough with all it's iterations. GT3 however would be different maybe!

Aston for me without a shadow of a doubt. Just seems far nicer and less in your face.

It would have to be the 911 Turbo for me. Always been my dream car. Although not one with ceramic brakes. Porsche replacements are circa £3k each. EACH! £12k for a full set and that's without pads. Ouchy.

'upgrade' to a set of steel alcons for £3k

eta - there's a 996 gt3 that's done 170k odd still on the original carbon disks, so it's not all doom and gloom

170k off original kit is very respectable. And unlikely to be light use from a carfeul lady driver. laugh

I changed from a 997 turbo to an r8 v8 prior to my current car,and I drove pretty much every viable option.I am a big porsche fan,and have had numerous variations of the 911.It all comes down to taste and preference but the 997 turbo is not a great car,it is biblically fast but does nto feel special, out of the 997 range the turbo was the worst car imo.THe r8 was a nicer drive in pretty much every respect.YOu also get treated much nicer in the r8 than you do in a 911.When i was tired of the r8 (after 3 years which is a record for car ownership for me) I test drove ferrari's maseratis gtr's astons and not in one instance did I come away from any test drive desiring the car more than the r8,in fairness I tinkered a bit with it with a miltek exhaust and remap so it was noticably quicker than stock.HOwever when invited to test the gen 2 997s I spent the entire time on the track wishing i was in the r8,handling wise it is on a different planet to the 997,and most other cars to be honest.
I changed to a gallardo purely because I hankered after one ever since i saw one and my needs changed i didnt need a daily drive sportscar, and truthfully although it feels much more special and is truly beautiful whereas the r8 is merely attractive, the r8 drives better.
