RE: SOTW: Convertibles For Autumn
Discussion
looked at the Audi convertibles before, well built and look ok but shiiiite to drive..most 4 seater convertibles are wobbly messes, especially 90's ones, so driving dynamics should be way down your list but the Audi is just so dull and slow..even the 2.8 V6 wouldn't pull the skin of a rice pudding..if you don't need 4 seats get the MX5

A 2-seater Convertible. nothing more, nothing less
Have you been in an MX5? I have, a sports car it is not.

Why is the MX5's cam cover a patchty gold colour?
Probably from burnt oil after filling up and then wiping any spilt oil around with a cloth... My choice would be the MX5, the BMW's aren't that nice to drive and very small inside, the Audi would be okay and does look like it is in good condition and allot of car for the money.
But pound for pound the MX5 wins, most reliable, most fun and very easy to sort if/when it goes wrong.

Owned all of these over the years - the Audi was unbelievably cool, rare in comparison to the 3 at the time but oh so slow compared to my previous Golf GTi. My e30 followed as I was very aspirational young chap. It was a 325i so compared to the Audi went like stink with 170ish bhp (I'm sure at the time the 320i was accredited with 150 rather than the mentioned 127?)and was a real winner with like minded aspirational young ladies. Back to the present and I have a 2000 MX5 which as we all know is an absolute blast. Which would I choose now? Tough one, but I reckon it'd be the chic of the Audi. Great SOTW
The E36 320i's had 150 bhp. The E30s pushed out 129 bhp.Dagnut said:

Of the three, the only one I would even consider would be the BMW. They're so stylish I could forgive the lack of performance; the auto could suit it, turning it into an enjoyable hood-down wafter. The condition of the hood on this one worries me though and I would have a very close look for rust - there could be plenty.
The Audi is irredeemably dull and cannot rescue anything by being a good car - it isn't especially. Whilst I grasp (kind of) what some see in the MX5 their charms escape me personally.

The BMW looks tidy and is a good price, despite having the wrong engine and gearbox....Those are easily changed! Even the 2litre motor will provide a reasonable drive, though...
The interior looks good and there *appears* to be little or no rust in the usual places (front scuttle, rear arches)...
The Audi is a horribly slow, wobbly barge, at best...
The Mazda, whilst probably the best drive of the three, obviously has rust issues...budget for replacement sills, at least...
I'd take the BMW...but then I like E30s...swap for a 325 M20 or M50 and a manual box, 15" BBS wheels and a new hood...excellent car for <£1k
