Urgh loathe it! New Beetles are driven by girls who don't appreciate the classics, making a chav girl racer version makes me want to vomit.

I'd never buy one, but it's still a huge improvement on the current model....

The DRLs look like those dodgy car eyelashes from a distance.

This will sell about as well to blokes as tampax compact.

Who the heck would want a go-fast Beetle? C'mon, be honest...
That's right. No one would want a go-fast Beetle. (Of course there will be a few here and there, but not enough to sway the answer to the question)
So why is VW doing this? Likely because there is someone in the Beetle Product Management group who is under the gun to create wider adoption of this car. And the numbers are showing that it just ain't going to happen as it is currently designed. That is, a different shell on a better (read Golf et al) car.
But, having worked in big companies, this poor soul cannot report back up that nothing will work, unless and until many millions are spent 'trying everything'. And then, said soul can report that, "Well we tried everything. Even a hotted up version and none of them sold!".
Perhaps then this retro-silliness can end and VW (and everyone else) can focus on building great cars and not radically improved old cars. No more two-ton Camaro's and Challenger's, Beetle a-la Golf's, PT Cruiser picnic baskets and the like.
Whew, I feel SO much better now.

I'm confused, I'm not a fan of the golf or sciirircococo. But I think that looks great, lowered, some multispoke lightweight wheels painted ancathrite and it'd look great.

Am I just out of touch with modern car tech or is down low an odd place to put engine intake?

It's usually at the base of the windscreen with the front bumper intakes being used for cooling.

In this if you drove through a ford or a small flood in the road then that's what would happen to your engine....
Not uncommon nowadays - I know more than one BMW owner that has done the kill-the-engine-in-the-ford trick

i like it and I am neither a hair dresser or a girl.

As mentioned looks like a 911 and a bit more practical and its bound to be as quick as a GTI atleast with decent handling.

The only guys I know who don't use moisturizer/face cream, are...well....very old. Pensioners actually. I'm guessing they're the same lot who make sweeping statements about human rights and whatnot.

Anyway, as I said earlier, this car looks massive. Like, it's got a lot of air between the panels and chassis. Wasted space really.

Manufacturer updates model range with hot version shocker.

If the Beetle R is superfluous, why aren't BMW M#s, 911 GT3s etc etc? On the basis of most of the complaints about it,the bog standard models will do.

Get a grip of yourselves. If there is a demand, someone will supply.

Nearly anyone that had one from the 1950s onwards. Okrasa, Judd, Empi, Porsche and many other from then until today have been pushing the Bug's performance.

It doesn't look that bad. As far as re-doing a classic, it kicks Minis current offerings into touch.

I quite like the look of it... the issue for me is how the Beetle name smashes into the 'R' trim, doesn't feel right...

Indeed, my friedn has been trying to sell his newbie V5 Sport with the VW bodykit and he is really struggling to shift it. I think he has it up for ale for a few months.

I've never been a fan of the hot or luke warm Bugs. I actually prefer the newbie in standard form, but some bigger wheels added smile

Is this not a direct competitor for the Audi TT?

I actually think that in styling terms, it's one of the more successful of the "modern recreation" type efforts. Certainly better looking than the MINI or Fiat 500. Shame the engine is in the front, though.
