I think the success of the original Beetle was it had a semi-human face and Beetle shape that eventually gave it its nickname and you had to project a character onto it. I think the mistake VW made with the last Beetle and this is trying way to hard to give it a cutesy face and force that "character" on you - which you may not like. That "face" looks very cartoony and that puts me off even though I quite like the "classic Beetle" and its derivations.

I imagine that VW are looking more to the US market where the surfer tradition is ingrained far more deeply and where the 50-plus age market who'll remember the original might appreciate the retro without compromising the performance. After all, look how many races Herbie won. wink

REALLY.

Talk about an Oxymoron.

The Words Beetle and R shouldn't really be used in context together.

I dont think its ever gonna be taken seriously

Am I just out of touch with modern car tech or is down low an odd place to put engine intake?

It's usually at the base of the windscreen with the front bumper intakes being used for cooling.

In this if you drove through a ford or a small flood in the road then that's what would happen to your engine....
Not uncommon nowadays - I know more than one BMW owner that has done the kill-the-engine-in-the-ford trick

Hmmmm, so why put it there? Do performance cars (I'm referring to things other than this Beetle) need more air rammed in the intake than can physically be sucked in from the base of the windscreen?

I quite like it! paperbag

I did always have a bit of a soft spot for the original Beetle RSI as well. There's something quite appealing about unusual performance cars!

As for the air intake debate....I think anywhere's fair game these days. It's not uncommon to find intake feeds in wheels arches to take advantage of low pressure air which is favorable from an induction point of view.

I can only imagine this car being bought almost by accident or as an impulse buy or through up-selling by a keen salesman to a naive punter. I doubt anyone ould be sane enough to look into buying a new car, rule out everything else at the price point and go, "yep, that's the one for me". But then again, each to their own.

I'm going to disagree for one reason and that is most modern cars look utter crap with their big fat safety bulbous noses and for me, the Scirocco is no looker either. That said, my solution is not to buy new at all and I would guess this car will sell at a plateau somewhere north of ridiculous and just short of bizarre.

Given it is an emulation of the original "people's car", a car for everyman, that sort of jars (and I appreciate that the Mini and Fiat 500 are also guilty of that so the historic link really has to be erased).

More wrong-wheel-drive Audi/VW twonk.

Send the power to the right wheels then come back to the Market.

That said, most people who buy this won't care/couldn't tell.

I really like. Looks alot better than the old one and i think it has more character and style than a golf. I dont understand why people are complaining about it looking too much like a porsche ? Its like saying you dont fancy a woman coz she looks too much like a model

Actually it's more Catch 22 as for years 911s have been likened to Beetles so while that is an insult, the converse must be a compliment though inevitably they must be bound to fall either side of a line between them.

It's more like saying a Passat is a mini-Phaeton and a Phaeton a bloated Passat - there can be no winner!
