Effortless pace without looking like it should be lined up on a starting grid somewhere, .
Agreed, and that the effortless pace will be responsible for a few lost licences biggrin

Having read the review it seems that this car is closer to its Alpina cousin than previous iterations were (low down shove, slightly softer set up etc).

I'd be very interested inseeing a back to back comparison between the M5 and B10.

Everyone always knocks the new M5 but they always end up mourning the loss of it.
BMW won't make a bad M5 - Fact!

Wasn't there much decrying of the E39 when it eventually came along, much in the vein of bewailing the loss of the hallowed Motorsport six, instead it was just a "warmed up 540i" and it was too big and heavy etc. There was probably similar when E28 gave way to E34 too, but I'm not that old to recall.
...
yes

The E34 Chassis was so much better, more comfortable, new look etc -in the early days, the cars fetched premiums.
There was a right old kerfuffle in the mags when they announced the E30 M3 would only have a 4-pot. Would have been even worse if Rosche had got his way and got a turbo on it hehe

Sorry, but I have to say this doesn't excite me at all.

It just seems very sanitised, very clinical and perfect in its execution, and rather lacking in emotion. It's the Kimi Raikonnen of fast saloons.

Take the obvious rival (Merc E63) in contrast... I like its big sledgehammer engine, I like the fact that there is a plaque telling you the Hans Bremmerenwagenscheltzer nailed it together. Its 'chintz' on the front is like Lewis Hamiltons earing - the whole thing just sticks two fingers up to convention.

I expect the M5 will be better to drive, quicker round the Nurburgring, faster accelerating to 60... but I'd rather have a 63.

If I wanted a super fast and well balanced car that's going to drink juice like a toddler, lose money like a stone, I'd buy this one.

I'd like to run something like this as a daily stter, but nothing more.

Shouldn't an M car have a slightly less antiseptic driver environment than this? Surely they could step out of the corporate identity box just a little for the banner-waver.

Well unlike most of you on here i actually think this could be a great car in about 3.5-4years! once the prices have fell through the floor and they are out of warranty i can see a few choice upgrades totally transforming these engines! smile

Here is a list of stuff aftermarket tuners SHOULD be working on NOW!!!!!

Cold air induction kit of the turbos.
Bigger chargecoolers or front mounted intercooler(s)
Turbo back exhaust inc. high flow cats.
Bigger either hybrid or stock replacement turbos.
Craking the ECU so they can remap the thing.

with those little aftermarket features i can se these M5s being 800++bhp MONSTERS! smile

Chris.

The E39 doesnt really sound very loud so I dont see how the noise thing matters so much, its just a quiet beat at 120 or so, just letting you know its there and at high revs in a low gears its never really that loud anyway.

So the noise thing is nonsense I reckon.
I see from your profile that you have a E39 523 so it's not really representative of the discussion here IMO.

On my old M5, you could hear it but it was a bit too quiet. I removed the back boxes so it was straight-through from the centre boxes. It sounded fantastic!
Just because my daily driver is a 523 doesnt mean one of my mates doesnt have an M5 wink

I thought that seeing as the discussion was about E39s I didnt need to say in E39 M5s the engine is relatively quiet. Even the one I was in last week with an aftermarket exhaust was still very quiet. Which I reckon is one of the best features, its just a normal comfortable saloon car, but then it picks up speed like a silly thing.

Heres pictures of it on my brothers website in case you dont believe me.

Trying to build a car that is all things to all people ultimately breaks down. Such is this new M5. Supercar? 4-person hauler? More efficient? Comfortable ride? Differentiated good looks? Seating designed to fit those who, um, can afford it?
Sorry, but the older M5's made choices, biased toward the performance set and thus less of a fit for the masses. BMW would be wise (IMHO) to reconsider the positioning of this beastie and build accordingly. Or just stop (which they quite understandably could never do).
All of the M's have become too heavy, too average (again, all things to all people) and less and less interesting. They are the performance cars for people who do not know what they want! smile

I've been thinking along those lines too. Now, not for minute would I doubt that this M5 is not the 'business' in every sense and does everthing one could expect with fantastic performance but if the choice was say a pristine E34 3.6 or this new M5, the 3.6 would honestly get the my vote.

It has the most tweaked chassis of all, even the engine sits lower down than a regular 5.

It is the real deal.
