That is a typically poor Autocar article. All it tells me is that Steve Sutcliffe likes the more extrovert looks and sound of the E63.

Let's see what the big boys say. Perhaps they'll agree. Perhaps they won't.

I would put more weight on What Steve Sutcliffe says than any other motoring journalist.

Well, he carries more weight than aany other journalist, that's true.

The article tells me almost nothing about what the cars are like to drive.

+1 Just hope AMG's change of direction doesn't send punters flocking to the marque in that time slowing the depreciation.

Chris Chilton, Car Magazine - little different from a 550i

Chris Harris, evo - totally different from any other 5 Series

Did EVO even test the 550i?

M5 & XFR have remarkably similar characteristics. AMG firmer ride, more responsive steering, every inch of the journey feels like an event.

I thought the m5 was 150kg heavier according to autocar, maybe I mixed that up ? Anway the point is I am more drawn to amg products now which is remarkable as having owned amg cars and m cars I woudl always prefer the M car...the e63 and c63 both blew me away though ,whereas the m3 just didnt raise my pulse, and the m6 was a talented but aloof beast.

CO2 emissions of just 232g/km is a great achievement for the day.

The numbers for the engine look great.

What are the weights of the new M5 unit and MP4-12C unit, like for like?

Some numbers for the two twin turbo units

M5 560bhp @ 6000, 502lbft @ 1500-5750 232g/km CO2, 28.5 combined cycle. 1870kg

MP4-12C 592bhp @ 7000 442 lbft @ 3000-7000 279g/km CO2, 24.2 combined cycle. 1300kg

Of course the M5 unit is for a kinda luxury barge with CO2 test cycle reducing features like stop-start whereas the other is for a road missile.
It's amazing if the almost 1.9 tonne barge with similar power is more economical than the supposed economical much lighter sports car.

Chris Harris seems to think BMW have nailed it with the new M5.

Agree though, that new M5 lump in a 1300kg car would be stonking.
That probably also says more about BMWs understanding of the emissions rules and measurement techniques than it does about the actual real world economy of the cars.

I assume that the M5 has an M button and that the factory delivery setting is for this to be set in the low performance mode, which is then the one which is tested.

Doesn't tell you much, but it does look rather good:

and what's wrong with that? you don't have the drive an M5 fast all the time, ya know.

We'll see when someone lines them up but my money is on the M5 showing the E63 its tail lights in a straight line and around a track.

the e63amg seem to be suffering massive losses at the moment with some at dealers that have been on sale for nearly a year.
i nearly bought a blk 1 that listed at £84k for £45k 2weeks ago with 24000 miles on it on a 59plate but my mate reckons it will lose at least another 5k in the next couple of months so i will wait that little bit longer for 1.the e63 is an amazing car that sounds and drives fantastic.
i think when it comes to cars like the m5,rs6,e63 most customers have a personal brand preference they are all good in there own way.
i would still prefer the old 6.3 v8 to the new 5.5tt v8 just for the sound alone.cloud9

Having just sold mine, I'd rather have an F10.

Honestly I'd rather have a CTS-V but if it has to be a BMW I'd take that V10 over an emissions mandated v8.
