How can a top 100 car list be taken seriously that has the Rover SD1, Renault Espace, London Black Taxi, Ford Transit (better than a 959!!) on it and a Mini as the winner......
It was about the cars that had the biggest impact on british culture. Large hatchbacks, MPVs, Cars designed to be taxis, Front engined vans and Superminis wouldn't exist without the cars you have mentioned.Edited by ANF11 on Friday 30th September 01:15

Remember what they used to say before exams at school? Read and re-read the question.
"Greatness, for the reason of this list, is defined by a vehicle's direct, significant contribution to British automotive culture, taking into account other World markets."
With due respect to the compiler and those who took part (and keep in mind I like plenty of the cars in the list) but that is just a compilation of peoples' favourite cars.
Dons flame proof trousers...
Tend to agree with you. Having taken the time to add my 2 pennies worth I'm actually slighted disappointed now that I have read the list. For example, where is the Renault 16 which provided the design blueprint for 99% of family cars since the mid-60s (being the first hatchback)? I can agree to number 1 but as you said, most of the cars on the list are only peoples favorites."Greatness, for the reason of this list, is defined by a vehicle's direct, significant contribution to British automotive culture, taking into account other World markets."

- Excellence of taste in the fine arts and humanities, also known as high culture
- An integrated pattern of human knowledge, belief, and behavior that depends upon the capacity for symbolic thought and social learning
- The set of shared attitudes, values, goals, and practices that characterizes an institution, organization, or group
e.g.
If as a small boy you dreamed about owning an F40 and had a poster of it on your wall, it may well be what made you become a petrol head. You may end up buying a GTi or an Elise...as you can't afford a Ferrari. But the Ferrari might have sparked the interest. I think that this is then culturally significant.
Just because something had an affect on the wider mass market or production techniques, doesn't automatically make it culturally significant.

I'm waiting for a blazing argument on why the Impreza is a significant amount of places higher (25% further up) than its 'arch nemeis', Lancer Evo.
I haven't read through all the thread yet, so don't know whether said argument has kicked off? I guess Evo owners don't frequent PH...?

Accessibility perhaps? Imprezas generally having been cheaper and easier to get hold of over the years, bringing the whole rally-rep thing to the masses. IE the Evo being comparable to the STi, while Subaru still had the WRX selling in much higher numbers as well.
It may also be a factor that even lower-spec NA Imprezas are still (mostly) AWD and have a broadly similar character - in comparison to sub-Evo Lancers which are about as interesting as the equivalent Corolla.

Most of us have met someone down the pub who moans about the government, yet tells you they couldn't be bothered to vote in the same breath.
A lot of this thread reads in a similar way.
300bhp put a lot of work into this, and deserves a lot of thanks for it. Having a go at him for making the list is like blaming the Electoral Commission for Cameron and Clegg...
