There is no rational argument I can think of which puts the Mclaren F1 ahead of the Bugatti Veyron...
Both are examples of "no cost" engineering - both were the absolute pinnacle of performance in their own time (and for long thereafter) and both are money-no-object exotics of the finest calibre.
Thing is tho, the Veyron utterly mashes the F1 in performance AND as a usable car (apart from that 3rd seat perhaps!) - so the only reason the F1 rates better are the rose-tinted glasses people are wearing??
.... apart from the fact that both cars had very different design briefs. Both are examples of "no cost" engineering - both were the absolute pinnacle of performance in their own time (and for long thereafter) and both are money-no-object exotics of the finest calibre.

One was a no compromise straight line numbers chaser that was lavished with luxury, and developed to handle well.
One was conceived as the ultimate expression of a sports car, and gifted with one of the greatest internal combustion devices ever cast .... It's top trumps numbers were a byproduct of the vision and engineering, and NOT the headline of the conceptual spec sheet.
I don't even consider the McLaren and Veyron as cars in the same class, or for direct comparision, they are that different in concept.

what exactly did a 288 GTO add to British automotive culture?
It would have been interesting to see if the 288 GTO placed so well in a survey 10 years ago before EVO magazine "discovered" it ... I have to confess that prior to EVO's articles, I'd always viewed it as being a bd predecessor the the F40 crossed with Magnum PIs daily driver.johnpeat said:

I actually had the F1 at NO 1 on my list...fact is 20 years on it's still a superfast car..you only need to look at the premiums in demands to see how highly it is regarded..shift 50 years into the future when people are looking at driving machines without computer interference, separating the mechanical age from the digital age and the F1 will be the pinnacle of mechanical automotive engineering. Both are examples of "no cost" engineering - both were the absolute pinnacle of performance in their own time (and for long thereafter) and both are money-no-object exotics of the finest calibre.

Remember what they used to say before exams at school? Read and re-read the question.
"Greatness, for the reason of this list, is defined by a vehicle's direct, significant contribution to British automotive culture, taking into account other World markets."
With due respect to the compiler and those who took part (and keep in mind I like plenty of the cars in the list) but that is just a compilation of peoples' favourite cars.
Dons flame proof trousers...
...and the Austin Allegro is nowhere to be seen! First square(ish) steering wheel, surely that's significant!"Greatness, for the reason of this list, is defined by a vehicle's direct, significant contribution to British automotive culture, taking into account other World markets."

why are people surprised the 2cv is on the list? one of the most instantly recognisable cars in the world which did its job much better than most...
(and they're great fun to drive, just don't use the brakes...)
Not suprised just that its in front of much better cars, the position covers all models in the range, ie 911, no GT3, carrera, Turbo, (All 911) yeah?(and they're great fun to drive, just don't use the brakes...)
So would you rather have a twink Mk1 Escort or a 2CV? (tbh i'd rather take an 1100 deluxe)
No original Lotus Elan, where was the voting for this list? I'd like to see what the choices were. The 911 covers all 911s, yet some cars are for individual models, such as the MK1 MX5 etc. Having said that, i think a list of the greatest 200 cars could be compiled & still there would be cars left out. These lists are kind of pointless in that sense.
