I went there a couple of weeks ago just for one lap on the way to Cologne. This is the first time I've been there in 5 years.

It was closed when we got there to clear up debris. We got on track 10 mins after it opened and we drove past 3 separate accidents which had obviously happened in those 10 mins since it re-opened.

I had to keep one eye on the rear view mirror the whole time.

It was great to be back on the track, I'd forgotten how steep some of the gradients are. However I can't see me ever going there again on a tourist day.
Yep.....sounds about normal for a tourist day......sadly frown

I think too many people turn up thinking they know the track as they played it on a computer game. I've even heard people say, "oh it's harder in real life".......yeah.....no st!

And to top it off, some of the novices actually turn up to race each other.

Cover is not a problem, it's covered by law on your existing policy under European cover. It is the difficult problem of ensuring the insurance company doesn't try to reclaim their liabilities from you.
Wrong! http://nurburgring.org.uk/insurance.php People really need to get their insurance checked before hand.

Jalopnik, hardly the most reliable site for such news.
But the police report ought to be reliable...
Because the police & honesty always go hand in hand.....rolleyes
And why would the police fabricate details of an accident at a track day? Maybe save the conspiracy theories for a different thread?
Oh i see, you're one of those types...... Well having spent a st load of time there, & seeing many accidents, including fatal accidents. I can tell you without a doubt, that when the police turn up. Drivers will not be fully upfront with the truth. But hey, you carry on in your naive little world where you believe what you're told to believe.
Fair enough.

But do you perhaps want to throttle back on the personal insults? I'm quite thick-skinned. And also patient. But we do all want to remain friends here...

(And it is a little presumptuous to assume that I haven't also spent plenty of time at the 'Ring. However correct you may be...)

I think it was mentioned here on PistonHeads that UK insurances don't cover the Ring, but for local guys it is just another ordinary public road and they are covered by their road insurances.
Maybe a year or two ago...

To be fair there is a fairly large board with a long list of rules and regulations, the trouble is I don't think there are many people who actually read it.

The Brit was at fault it seems according to the report....but he had a number plate M3 LGR (Lager?), so no surprise there then!

I meant nothing personal, i'm just very sarcastic in my humour. The written (or typed) word is hard to convey that i guess. Sorry! smile

Hope everyone is okay, would still like to go back there, even with the risks associated.

Looks like the yellow/red/grey VX220 has seen battle on more than one occasion.

Ahhh, so your the type who states "Because the police & honesty always go hand in hand" which actually says that the police are unlikely to be honest in this situation; which as Riggers said is not a sustainable statement, because why would they be dishonest in this situation? Then you defend this nonsense with the irrelevant statement that the drivers wont give honest statements and therefore the report is 'wrong.' Do you expect us to believe that the ton of other evidence at the scene of the accident wont be taken into account and form the bulk of evidence contained in the report. Also bearing in mind that the conclusion of a report as released to the media and the actual report are two different things.

Therefore one can only conclude that your original statement expresses your particular prejudice, which Riggers was right to question.

The insurance issue is why (despite the fact that I'd love to go) I won't go to the Ring. I'm astonished that so many people go from the UK, often in very expensive motors, the vast majority of which are not insured on the Ring - a place where even banging the armco can see you with an enormous bill - never mind the huge liability risks if you cripple someone yikes I wouldn't dare drive down the street in the UK without full insurance, never mind razzing round a track with a load of other people in very expensive, tasty cars at warp 10.

Just a thought - maybe the owners of the Ring should be checking insurance details before letting vehicles on there? Or - given the price of it - offering cover with the lap price?

So sadly I will be sticking with doing the Ring on my Xbox.

I hope it's of use to many. Over the years too many people have pranged their cars & then found out it's their problem.

I have no idea how many here have never been, but intend to go. But please keep in mind it's a very dangerous bit of tarmac. I still watch pro drivers doing laps on Youtube & have no idea how they can go so fast. As we're guys, none of us want to admit any flaws in our own driving, to that all i can say is lose the ego & learn. Please don't take that as me telling people how to suck eggs, that's not my intention. I first went there with an ego......i left with a car on a flatbed......& no ego.

I've done the 'Ring, 6 laps in total now. It rained for all but 1 of them.

It's scary, but not when you're doing it. It's scary when you actually think about the risks involved, and what could happen.

Did a dozen laps or so 12 months to the day, was the best time ever, but next time I go it'll be in a 'ring rental car.

The e36 m3 doesnt look very well. frown

I went to the ring last month (first time) and did around 9 laps on a tourist day. I had no issues at all but there where quite a few smash-ups.

As others have said people need to remeber to take it easy and treat it as a country road hoon but with no oncoming traffic.

Its an amazing experience. If you are worried, then do it in a hire car thats properly insured from Rent4ring or RSR.

I've fortunate to have been lots in my own cars and plenty of times in Clios/Meganes from RSR.

Just an amazing amazing place. Yes its busy and dangerous at times on TF days. But its not always busy first thing in morning or last thing in the evening on alot of TF days.

Or do a proper Trackday there. They are awesome fun.... expecially when they link the GP circuit in as well.

Apologies if I've missed it further up the thread, but one of the comments on jalopnik refers to the roadworks signs being placed the wrong side of a high-speed brow leading up to the crash site. It's claimed the 'Ring authorities were told but didn't get the signs moved. Contributory negligence if true?
