What defines a classic? I'm of the opinion that if the general public would view your car as an old bag of nails, (even if the car is pristine) it's not in classic status (yet). These cars are undoubtedly epic in their day in unmolestered form, and I would still love a drive! But would I want to be seen driving it though????

I only found one under £20k. I suspect it's not in the same nick as the one at the top of this thread...!!!

Another under £20k:

http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/2425512.htm

So it looks like £20k - £40k covers the range. I would have thought the one at the top of this thread could be had for £40k if they were made an offer!

Well i wish them luck trying to get that kind of money for them. That's way over book, for a car that isn't that special.

????????? Have a look around, there are several spotless examples of RS500s for under £20,000. £40K is just insane, that's why it's been for sale for some time.
Where? Any links?
No way. 6 or 7 years ago when they were way undervalued, maybe but not nowadays.

I have seen thoroughly knackered RS500s (ie: unroadworthy, rotten shell and bits missing) sell for north of ten grand...
I've seen a few myself sell for that money, i know the difference between a standard Cosworth & an RS500, trust me, this guy wanting £40k+ is living in a dream land. Even classic car sites "only" value them at a top end of £25k.
I disagree. I have lived and breathed RS500s and nothing else for the past 7 years. Nowadays, if it's under £20k it's generally tatty, simple as. Good modified ones or high milers go in the twenties (generally), very clean original or near original cars are Very high twenties but more likely £30k+ and low miler minters are high thirties to mid forties depending on mileage, condition and originality. All the ads I have linked to in my earlier post are realistic asking prices. You won't chip the dear ones by more than 5% or so...

There are some very well priced Escort Cosworths on PH. A better car in my opinion.

Yep, heavily modified says it all. Looks is reasonable nick though. Good price if it's a straight car and the motor's good.

£19950 in '87 is now £43092 in todays money, so it must be one of the best cars ever in terms of depreciation.

I'm not going to knock your clear knowledge & love for your car. But i'd wager the ones that actually sell for over £30k are few & far between.

Very much so. The original RS Cosworth (pre-RS500) makes a vastly superior road car in standard trim to the RS500 thanks to the smaller T3 turbo. The RS500 is a dog in comparison. The Escort (and particularly the last of them - the small (T25) turbo cars) drove the best of them all in standard trim. Still, they all feel like a bag of st on the road compared to my Focus RS Mk2 daily driver.

I knew something didn't seem right about the moonstone car. No foglights inboard of the indicators!
THIS is how I remember it.

I used to own a MK1 Focus RS, one car i actually regret selling frown Yet to try the MK2, love them in the white or blue. Green, not so sure....

You're quite right. It's a very specialist market of course but there are people out there who will wait and pay top dollar for the right car. I'm umm-ing and aah-ing about getting a second one as I'd really like a Moonstone car.

The RS500's came with grilles in place of the foglamps. The grilles allowed for brake cooling ducts to be added on the Gp.A cars. That said, every RS500 came with the foglights in a box in the boot and can be fitted quickly as the wiring is all in place.

I think thats key here. If an owner wanted rid of one fast, he (or she) would probably have to take a pretty low price to get it shifted.

thewheelman - I've got a mk1 FRS at the moment, had it about 6 months, love it so far smile

If you wanted to get yourself back in one I think you could pick up a bargain, the market for them seems pretty static at the moment, have seen cars going as low as £6k in recent months. £8k gets a decent one at the moment. ETA: and thats based on asking prices too!

Ah. Got you, understood.
Amazing the difference with and without.
