RE: Driven: Ferrari 458 Spider
Discussion
Lest we not forget that the Aventador will allegedly be available as a roadster in 2012. And with Ferrari claiming that a decent spec 458 Spider costing 250k, price wise it 'could' be comparable. Although with 690bhp and a top speed of 217mph (for the coupe) they are on a different level for performance. Speculation tho, obviously.

And the Aventador has a carbon tub so wont have loss (30% apparently!) of chassis rigidity issues like the 458.The Aventador is awesome; it looks like a super car. In the current crop of super cars it looks a relative bargain, especially when taking into account Pagani, Koenigsegg and Bugatti.

In a moment of startling honesty, Lanzavecchia admitted that the Spider's thirty per cent less stiff than the coupé.
The Daily Telegraph article said:
Ferrari has strengthened the chassis to compensate, which has added 50kg, but the monstrous power hides the gain, and the company says that as a result of the stiffer chassis, structural rigidity is unchanged.
So who's right?Autocar review video:

Hmmm, Richard Bremner - I've always liked your writing, but you are not, repeat not, a presenter. I'm afraid my broadband router has more charisma.
I have tried it - there is a video of me reviewing the R8 Spider knocking around in internet-land, and fully admit after seeing it that i'm terrible, and not suited to it one bit. You should maybe do the same...
Oh, and I do wish that Autocar would ditch the cheesy rock intro to their videos.
The 458 Spider sounds sodding lovely though, doesn't it? I'm looking forward to a video review by Chris Harris.

For a minute there I thought it said the average buyer will spend £250,000....
....hang on
This does concern me. I always seem to remember the 'baby' Ferrari being a bit more expensive than a top spec 911 turbo, now it must be getting on for a £100k more expensive, or am I totally out of touch with the Porsche price structure? ....hang on

So who's right?I'm having trouble getting my head around the front end of the 458. But otherwise, both coupe and spyder are quite a bit better looking than the confused appearance of the 360 and (particularly) the 430. And the engine specs and sound (a few have shown up near my home) are just exquisite. I believe that it is the finest supercar of the day - including the Pagani, the new Lambo, and the very silly Bugatti. Too early to judge the McLaren of course, but that too is not an attractive car.
They all take a back seat to the Ford GT and the Carrera GT. The two greatest two-seaters to come along in many many years.
Ahh, but that's progress... or something like that
