Only 'cos he's not having to foot the repair bill wink
No. Only because he was racing for Williams Renault at the time. That or it was just PR for Renault, he was generally known for owning Bentleys.

Great car, but not a patch on it's bigger brother the 21Turbo. I nearly traded my 21 in for one many years back.... but then I came to my senses hehe. Would like a set of the Ph1 rims for my 9 though!

I seem to recall that the R16 16v won What Car's Hot Hatch of the Year for 2/3 years?

In last weeks SOTW you compared the 106 rallye to the BMW 525i. This week it's the Renault 19 16v isn't as good as the Saab 900.

It makes no sense. It's like me saying that computer keyboards are rubbish, I much prefer LeicesterTown Centres's Travelodge.

....bought this purely for the bonnet vent...and loved every minute! Ran it for over 2 years between 2002 - 2004 and it had very few gremlins compared to the 309 GTI that preceded it....however, I did need to replace the gearbox, and yep, as previously mentioned, they like a clutch cable or two....

Things that stick in my mind:
1) great seats
2) pukka engine that never missed a beat
3) ....bonnet vent (",)

Have seen this one in the flesh and it really is in excellent condition and is in better condition than its years suggest! Seriously tempted but just no time to play with!

I had one of these as my first company car. L reg. It had dodgy styling but was a fantastic car to drive. Drove to France and all over. Handled really well and went well.

The 19 16V was prety good, why was the Megane 16V so crap?

Discuss. hehe

From my own experience the 19 16V was okay, not as good as my 309GTi but I couldn't drive the Megane without tilting my head, it felt slower, less composed and it kept breaking down. Luckilly I didn't own it but the chap trying to sell it keeps getting it back like a bad penny.

I remember years ago my Mum having a Phase 2 K-reg metallic blue Renault 19 16v Chamade, with all the options and leather interior. It was gorgeous. I was 18 or 19 at the time and somehow managed to get on the insurance.

To this day (and I currently drive an M3), it was one of the most fun cars I've ever driven - it was lightweight (not much over 1 tonne), had a fantastic chassis with very direct steering that let you feel every inch of the road. I remember the engine was particularly impressive at the time, it had a distinctly motorsport feel to it - free revving and I think it had variable valve timing. The R19 definitely came from the era when French cars were the best at being nippy and nimble.

Also, I think the Chamade (saloon) version is far prettier than the Coupe, it kind of looked like it could have been Touring Car (sort of!). A bit like the Ford Sapphire Cossie.

Great car smile

I had a green 19 16v chamade as my second car. I was 18 and managed to somehow get a legit quote of £1300 third party fire and theft on it, which felt like a steal at the time.

I did as most 18 year old lads do and drove it everywhere at full tilt, including some top speed runs on my own private test track that was very similar in many ways to the M25 on the way back from Gatwick.

When compared to my friend's Escorts, Colts etc, I felt like a freakin' king. Leather seats, big stereo, bonnet scoop and 137BHP to hand. I remember lots of good memories that summer.

It was also *considerably* more expensive to run that the XR2 that it replaced. The thermostat housing managed to sheer one of its flimsy little bits off it, and it was a dealer only place. My engineering skills then were nothing like they are now, so I felt the only choice was to stump up the cost of a new part. Apparently, just that year and model of car had 3 variants and mine was well over £200. In hindsight, I was having my pants pulled down by the dealer who seemed quite happy to bamboozle a teenager.

The cat also let go which took out the rear exhaust. Another few hundred there. And then several other bits and bobs.

Great car though - lots of happy memories and, despite having never driven anything nearly as powerful as that before, I kept it the right way up. I did accidentally induce lift off oversteer in it once and promptly shat myself, yet felt like Colin Mcrae as I managed to hold the slide by luck more than skill.

We had a diesel Renault 19 at one point, rattly old pig of a car. One of my mates father had a 16v and it always looked like a lovely car.

I recall an old article in Motorsport magazine by Tim Harvey in their "Worst Car I Ever Drove" series, he claimed the R19 BTCC car was little more than a roadcar with a rollcage rather than the ground-up builds of the rest of the grid.
