....bought this purely for the bonnet vent...and loved every minute! Ran it for over 2 years between 2002 - 2004 and it had very few gremlins compared to the 309 GTI that preceded it....however, I did need to replace the gearbox, and yep, as previously mentioned, they like a clutch cable or two....
Things that stick in my mind:
1) great seats
2) pukka engine that never missed a beat
3) ....bonnet vent (",)

The 19 16V was prety good, why was the Megane 16V so crap?
Discuss.
From my own experience the 19 16V was okay, not as good as my 309GTi but I couldn't drive the Megane without tilting my head, it felt slower, less composed and it kept breaking down. Luckilly I didn't own it but the chap trying to sell it keeps getting it back like a bad penny.

I remember years ago my Mum having a Phase 2 K-reg metallic blue Renault 19 16v Chamade, with all the options and leather interior. It was gorgeous. I was 18 or 19 at the time and somehow managed to get on the insurance.
To this day (and I currently drive an M3), it was one of the most fun cars I've ever driven - it was lightweight (not much over 1 tonne), had a fantastic chassis with very direct steering that let you feel every inch of the road. I remember the engine was particularly impressive at the time, it had a distinctly motorsport feel to it - free revving and I think it had variable valve timing. The R19 definitely came from the era when French cars were the best at being nippy and nimble.
Also, I think the Chamade (saloon) version is far prettier than the Coupe, it kind of looked like it could have been Touring Car (sort of!). A bit like the Ford Sapphire Cossie.
Great car

I had a green 19 16v chamade as my second car. I was 18 and managed to somehow get a legit quote of £1300 third party fire and theft on it, which felt like a steal at the time.
I did as most 18 year old lads do and drove it everywhere at full tilt, including some top speed runs on my own private test track that was very similar in many ways to the M25 on the way back from Gatwick.
When compared to my friend's Escorts, Colts etc, I felt like a freakin' king. Leather seats, big stereo, bonnet scoop and 137BHP to hand. I remember lots of good memories that summer.
It was also *considerably* more expensive to run that the XR2 that it replaced. The thermostat housing managed to sheer one of its flimsy little bits off it, and it was a dealer only place. My engineering skills then were nothing like they are now, so I felt the only choice was to stump up the cost of a new part. Apparently, just that year and model of car had 3 variants and mine was well over £200. In hindsight, I was having my pants pulled down by the dealer who seemed quite happy to bamboozle a teenager.
The cat also let go which took out the rear exhaust. Another few hundred there. And then several other bits and bobs.
Great car though - lots of happy memories and, despite having never driven anything nearly as powerful as that before, I kept it the right way up. I did accidentally induce lift off oversteer in it once and promptly shat myself, yet felt like Colin Mcrae as I managed to hold the slide by luck more than skill.

Sort of like this: Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
