Clutch cables!
I think in 3years of ownership the car went through 4 clutch cables. If fact one time rather than leave my car in a particularly bad part of bracknel I drove back to camberley without the use of a clutch, trial by fire in engine/braking/car control. I used to get it sorted by a Renault specialist who had a few trials cars about and apparently this was a very well known fault that happened to certain cars, and others could go 100K without needing one. And to fit a new one was a bleeding nightmare due to the huge heat shield that used to stop the inside of dash catching fire.

My dad had a brand new Renault 21 many moons ago which went through lots of clutch cables. Apparently a common Renault thing of that era to do with the conversion from left to right hand drive and the cable rubbing somewhere and fraying. Got to love French "engineering".
I used to have a hatchback one of these which i actually bought and sold then bought back.
I loved it until the steering column decided to snap one day on a motorway at 70 miles an hour which is quite scary when your heading towards a concrete call at that speed with no steering.
Luckily there was a dip between the hard shoulder and the slow lane which knocked the front wheels so then ended up skidding across the motorway finally coming to a stop blocking the middle and the fast lane.
How i didnt hit anything is a miracle, and when the police turned up they could not believe it as had never seen anything like that in their life and couldnt believe i was alive.
The annoying thing was as well was that cos i hadnt actually hit anything i couldnt even say it was an accident and claim off my insurance so it was treated as a breakdown

We had three. On was Champagne Gold - and 89, the a 92 and finally a special edition Renault 19 Baccarra. Nerd hat on "Chamade" was dropped for post 92 facelifts.
The Baccarra had the best leather bucket seats and my mother, who really can drive (hotwiring minis in her teens to drive the backroads) used to ring its neck.

I use to drive my parents 19 1.9td 5 door, was a great as my 1st car, and was very reliable until i wrote it off. Brother had a 3 door phase 2 16v executive, was a nice motor, and looked really good in 3 door form and a quick motor. The sports seats in them were very supportive and comfortable,good shed.
Good shed! I remember these being quite well thought of in their day. Funny though, looking at it, you realise Patrick le Quement's lasting influence on Renault - they'd never build anything quite so ordinary-looking these days, but for what it is, it's fairly handsome.
I remember a mate of mine who wanted to get one to replace his Jetta GTI and had his heart set on one he'd already had a look at in some used car dealer's forecourt. He asked me to have a look at it before he handed over the cash, and it turned out he hadn't looked under the bonnet - and seen the anti-roll bar that had rusted so badly it had sheared in two. The aluminium pedal-caps were held on with bailer twine too. He walked away and bought an Escort RS Turbo instead, but even today I can't believe they were asking £1195 for it.
Still, in good nick it's probably a nice car. I like sporty small front-drive saloons - their appeal isn't that of a 3-series, but more a giant hot-hatch with added rear bracing, very BTCC.

When I was a wee nipper (about 13 years ago) and being a skint student I didn't have a car but my parents let me use my mums car during the holidays. It was a Phase 2 R19 1.9D (non-turbo) poverty spec in white. Bugger all power and equipment (had windy windows, no central locking etc.) but it was 2 years old and had blacked out lights along the back. I thought I was the mutts nuts at the time.
But how I lusted after a 16V hatch in this colour. Reading this brings back fond memories of burning around the Cornwall lanes, up to Newquay every night, foot welded to the floor trying to extract anything out of the 90bhp(??) diesel.

The mid to late 90's was fantastic for loads of things. A guy up the road from me had a Hyundai coupe in red with a rather large spoiler and 17's AND an Audi coupe with 19's...I thought at the time that they were they coolest and therefore fastest cars on the road.
Anything with a 16v badge was quick as well, Escorts, Fiestas, Corsas...
Hot hatches were still hot and M-cars were still pure...good times!

I love these, but would prefer the pre facelift version for looks. I'm no R19 expert, but I believe that the facelift is supposed to be the better car, with a few 'bug fixes' that were carried out as partof the facelift.
My dad had a 19 1.4 as a company car back in 1990, wasnt a bad motor in its day and all the talk in the motoring press was that it was light years ahead of the equivalent vauxhall / ford.
Always wanted one of these but was put off by reliability stories which probably were mostly not based on fact and they were very pricy when at the time when I started driving. Don't know if I would go for this particular car but it does look in good condition but definitely not look like a 2008 car!!!

I had a hatchback as my first car, one of the last phase 1 cars. Met black with black leather - never saw another in that colour to be fair. Never let me down, and plenty quick enough as a first car.
Sold it 18 months later for more than I paid for it too! Where are you now J851 VSX (probably a 2x2 cube).
